The upgrade process of my Dell Optiplex is finally done!
Special thanks @AmyIsCoolz for facilitating the purchase of the parts and guiding me through the assembly and software changes.

I am having trouble getting Linux (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to boot after installing on a Dell Optiplex 5040 and 3040 models with UEFI booting.
I am pretty sure it would work fine in Legacy mode.
Since UEFI is newer, I am guessing that is the recommendation... but will Linux work fine on Legacy boot with current kernels in the current year? Any reasons or features that I really should have with UEFI? Or is Legacy boot going to be fine?

As a #Windows enthusiast since my school days, I was finally able to upgrade my aging #Dell #OptiPlex 3020M with #Fedora Server 43 a few days ago - and what can I say? Easy and quick installation, hardware was 100% supported: fantastic. Setting it up via #Cockpit is a dream. Currently, two VMs are running for #homeassistant and #plexmediaserver (also with Fedora Server 43, of course).
I'm considering upgrading my #Windows 11 Laptop to Fedora 43 as well, but I'm still hesitating because #Affinity v3 is not compatible. -

Heut Morgen nach dem Frühstück die BIOS Batterie erneuert, er quarkte Ende letzter Woche rum beim Hochfahren das sie bereits schwach wäre 🙄.
Hab sie eben auf dem Esstisch gegen eine frische ausgetauscht 😁, nun stellt sich mir die Frage ob ich noch ein BIOS Update mache 🤔. "Problem" dabei ist das es die Rechner Seriennummer bei DELL nicht gibt auf deren Webseite, ich aber für die Modellreihe ein BIOS herunterladen kann. Ist das BIOS in allen OptiPlex 755 gleich 🤷🏻♂️.

I’m working on two similar Dell Optiplex machines, six generations apart.
The Dell Optiplex 3010 and the 3070.
Very similar in design and layout. The 3070 has nvne on board and PC4 memory, so certainly some changes.
Speaking of that nvme, the upgrades I did on the 3070 were:
- a migration from a slow 500GB WD Blue hard drive to an nvme 1TB SSD
- Doubled the memory from 8GB to 16GB
- Upgraded the OS from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 11 Pro.

Can anyone confirm if it's possible to install Debian Linux (not Ubuntu) for Proxmox on a Dell Optiplex 7090 SFF / MT?
I ran into some challenges with a 7070 a few weeks ago, but managed to get it working with a BIOS upgrade. I'd like to know it'll work on a 7090 before I buy one.
Would also love to know if you can use a 4TB m.2 drive AND two 3.5" HDDs at the same time in the MT. Specs suggest it's not supported but 🤷

Comments, tips welcome from the #HomeLab #foss , #diy folks and all. I saw this cabinet at my local #thrift store, thinking of converting it into a data cabinet. Will need to add ventilation, but it’s solid, cheap & has a lock (need to keep junior engineers out). I don’t have much hardware yet, but will eventually add 24 port switch, a NAS. For now plenty of room for a pair of #optiplex es and MacMinis. Still deciding on protectli w/ #opensense or #pfSense appliance Thanks all 😊. Alt text added

Tak dnes pečlivější pokus o instalaci #Debian #gnulinux na Dell #OptiPlex 3060. Včera večer už dost únava a po instalaci nešlo bootovat a během půl hodiny jsem to nedokázal rozchodit, protože debilní #UEFI BIOS 😖 Už jsem zapomněl, že kdysi před lety jsem s tím taky zápasil, proč v dnešní době musí být vše složitější než dřív? To není život dostatečně složitý, ještě si to musíme sami sobě víc komplikovat? 🤦
Dnes půjdu podle různých návodů přímo od Dellu. #Linux
