Pacific farmers are reviving traditional knowledge to tackle a changing climate

Drawing on long-held knowledge, research is helping farmers better adapt to climate challenges like #drought, weed pressure and declining #SoilHealth

Excerpt: " #Taro (Colocasia esculenta) is central to #Samoan diets and #CulturalIdentity and is also an important export crop. It is a carbohydrate-rich staple, consumed both fresh and in processed products like flour, chips, noodles and baby food.

"Current techniques that use chemical #WeedKillers to grow taro are costly and negatively affect soil health and the surrounding environment.

"Now, farmers are trialling alternative weed control methods like #mulching and #SheepGrazing, and then comparing these techniques with traditional #HandWeeding in taro cropping.

"The integration of sheep grazing in particular is a new practice in traditional Samoan taro farming, offering an innovative approach to #WeedManagement.

"The project has also trialled leguminous #AlleyCropping, another relatively new practice in the region, where fast-growing leguminous trees like #Gliricidia, #Sesbania and #Erythrina are planted to generate biological mulch for #WeedSuppression and #SoilEnrichment.

"If stratospheric aerosol injection were used for climate intervention, aircraft passengers would be exposed to the resulting sulfate aerosol cloud. We show here, based on simulations from three Earth system models for a high-latitude low-altitude injection scenario, that for the scenario studied the resulting sulfuric acid concentration inside the cabin would on the average be just below air quality exposure guidelines, but more work is needed to determine how often those levels would be hazardous."

The problem might not be confined to passengers. Ages ago a firm I worked with prepositioned on the Yucatan Peninsula a bunch of vehicles equipped with instrument cabs, each containing a myriad of electronic equipment. During the weeks this equipment was waiting for assignments El Chichón volcano erupted, venting as volcanoes do a lot of sulfate aerosol. Combined with atmospheric humidity this became sulfuric acid aerosol, which infiltrated the instrument cabs and ate up thousands of electrical contacts on PCB edge connectors, cable junctions, etc. The entire fleet was disabled and had to be recalled for refit.

Humidity in aircraft cabins and in general at high altitude is typically very low, so perhaps this wouldn't be a threat? But it seems a good idea to assess that.

Nobody really wants #sai but when impact #climatechange becomes devastating it might become our last resort. My blog describes how SAI can cool the earth in 2 years and keep temperature steady even if CO2 keeps rising. We still need to slash CO2, but slower and avoiding collapse
Risks are big, but I have summed them up realistically without all the doom and gloom.

One of my earliest, popular posts here on mastodon was about #geoengineering through #srm #SolarRadiationManagement through #sai #StratosphericAerosolInjection , or venture capitalist dudes from “Making Sunsets” tried to create fake Volcanoes in the stratosphere to cancel out some greenhouse gas fueled global warming.

Last fall #nsf convened a panel of experts including scientists like me plus social scientists and policy makers— virtually so very low-cost -- to figure out the impact of such a program (as well as other geoengineering ideas for carbon capture and marine cloud brightening etc.) on the world.
