555 timer Integrated Circuit
This gem is now 55 years old! A wonderful history is described in this vid.
Naturally I also looked in the wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica to find goodies of the time this wonderful timer was build. Since no patent was filed you can find a billion versions of it, which is a nice variant on the patent theme
Wikipedia states
The timer IC was designed in 1971 by Hans Camenzind under contract to Signetics.[3] In 1968, he was hired by Signetics to develop a phase-locked loop (PLL) IC. He designed an oscillator for PLLs such that the frequency did not depend on the power supply voltage or temperature. Signetics subsequently laid off half of its employees due to the 1970 recession, and development on the PLL was thus frozen.[6] Camenzind proposed the development of a universal circuit based on the oscillator for PLLs and asked that he develop it alone, borrowing equipment from Signetics instead of having his pay cut in half. Camenzind's idea was originally rejected, since other engineers argued the product could be built from existing parts sold by the company
We are sure glad marketing was on good insticts then
The first design for the 555 was reviewed in the summer of 1971.[8] After this design was tested and found to be without errors, Camenzind got the idea of using a direct resistance instead of a constant current source, finding that it worked satisfactorily.[8] The design change decreased the required 9 external pins to 8, so the IC could be fit in an 8-pin package instead of a 14-pin package.[8] This revised version passed a second design review, and the prototypes were completed in October 1971 as the NE555V (plastic DIP) and SE555T (metal TO-5).[9] The 9-pin version had already been released by another company founded by an engineer who had attended the first review and had retired from Signetics; that firm withdrew its version soon after the 555 was released. The 555 timer was manufactured by 12 companies in 1972, and it became a best-selling product.[6]
Quite neat this was for us electronic tinkerers and engineers
The 555 found many applications beyond timers. Camenzind noted in 1997 that "nine out of 10 of its applications were in areas and ways I had never contemplated. For months I was inundated by phone calls from engineers who had new ideas for using the device."[8]

Strangers
Yesterday I had a lovely
Interaction with
A lady on the bus.
She is visiting from Germany
And was returning from
A day spent in a forest.
We bonded over our
Love of trees.
She asked for
A recommendation
For a place to visit.
I first mentioned Lynn Canyon
And she said that’s
Where she spent the day
And it was wonderful.💟🌳💟

Lupin III Treasure of the Sorcerer King with Robbie Sherman (Conversations with Robbie Sherman)
Buckle up for a PS2 heist where Lupin III swaps manga mischief for blocky stealth antics in Treasure of the Sorcerer King, that 2004 gem channeling Monkey Punch’s rogue into disguises-gone-wrong and treasure hunts that test more patience than finesse.
Joining the vault-cracking crew this time is Robbie Sherman from Conversations with Robbie Sherman, dishing on how the game stacks up to the source chaos of Jigen’s aim, Goemon’s blade ballet, and Fujiko’s inevitable backstab.
So grab your best disguise and let’s see if you can sneak the treasure out of this one. Either way it’s going to be a blast.
Learn such things as:
- When does homage become IP theft?
- Does it ever work to retcon multiple unrelated characters into a single one and act like it’s not weird at all?
- Do you really need those side characters? Can’t we just get rid of all of them and follow the main character exclusively?
- And so much more!
You can Robbie on BlueSky @convoswrob and his podcast Conversations with Robbie Sherman.
If you want to be a guest on the show please check out the Be a A Guest on the Show page and let me know what you’re interested in.

Over the Hedge with Doug Fink (Walloping Websnappers, Novel Gaming, Falling with Style, Skreeonk)
Sometimes a game says it’s based on a comic. Sometimes a movie says it’s based on a comic. And sometimes a game says it’s based on that movie that says it’s based on a comic, and suddenly we’re three layers deep in adaptation lasagna.
This week, we’re cracking open Over the Hedge for the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox—a game that definitely follows the movie’s lead and only politely waves at the original comic strip from across the yard. Expect sneaking, snacking, and more suburban chaos than your average HOA meeting can handle.
Joining the show is Doug Fink (Walloping Web Snappers, Falling with Style, Novel Gaming, and Skreeonk) to help sort out what happens when animals, energy drinks, and licensed games collide in one very busy backyard.
Grab your energy drinks and questionable life choices. I hope you don’t get pinched by the exterminator.
Learn such things as:
- Is the key to all of this the friends you bring along the way?
- Are humans and urban sprawl the real villains here?
- Do you actually need to base a game on a thing to have it be based on the thing?
- And so much more!
You can find Doug on BlueSky @ickybooley and of course all of his wonderful shows on the Glitterjaw Queer Podcast Collective, Walloping Websnappers, Novel Gaming, Falling with Style, and Skreeonk.
If you want to be a guest on the show please check out the Be a A Guest on the Show page and let me know what you’re interested in.

A rescue cat who literally stole our hearts
“He’s just a cat” is a phrase one hears every now and then. Oh, but Gus was anything but “just a cat.”
We tearfully said goodbye to our best buddy over the weekend and are both completely devastated. Seventeen years old…but an eternity in our hearts. Personally, I don’t recall ever crying so much and so often…especially over the passing of a family pet.
I met Gus, a very handsome tuxedo cat, for the first time when he was four years old, as I started dating my future wife. Gus was one half of a dynamic kitty duo with Ellie who both lived with her and her daughters. While Ellie was open and welcoming, Gus was very shy and quite afraid of newcomers at the time. Maybe a half-hour after someone came in he would cautiously stroll into the room to see what all the fuss was about.
Over the years, Gus would grow and mature in so many wondrous ways it’s hard to imagine him once being so shy and afraid. He literally became our very best friend, especially when Ellie moved in with our youngest daughter after college. In fact, it almost seemed like he realized it was his time to shine. And boy, did he ever!
Gus went by many nicknames, including Gussie, Gus-Gus, Gustav the Magnificent, Gus-a-roo-roo, and most recently as Secret Agent 47. When you have a debonair tuxedo cat living with you, what else can he be but a spy. His assignment (and life-long mission) was to find intelligence among humanoids. Obviously, a nearly impossible task.
Secret Agent 47 became his alternative-persona when we moved to the Southwest about five years ago. And did he ever fit that star billing. He also attracted a huge following on Nextdoor here in the Albuquerque area, once garnering more than 10,000 views. Neighbors and online acquaintances always were excited to learn the lastest adventures of Gus and celebrated every victory over his nemesis like the Celery Stalker and the Grim Sweeper.
The outpouring of love and affection on Nextdoor for this “community cat” as one fan wrote after his passing, was so very heartfelt and kind. Even now, we fully expect him to be performing aerial security reconnaissance for Heaven to assure that the devil never makes any inroads there.
Gus loved the Southwest…especially the sunshine. After twelve years in often cloudy Michigan, the amount of sunshine here was wonderful for him. Like clockwork, throughout the year you knew roughly what time of day it was by where Gus was napping in the sun. Please note, I use the term “napping” for the uninitiated. Actually, he was silently spying on anyone and everyone in the house. What a better cover than to be a napping cat.
Gus even succeeded in converting this blog author from a dog lover into an ardent cat lover. Nearly every morning we would Meow at me and I would give him his “kitty message.” He would just purr away while stretching out and have a huge smile on his face. During the day, we would hug him atop the reclining chair, atop the couch, or wherever he happened to be at the time. In the evenings, he would wander back and forth between our chairs to get hugs, pet, and warm snuggles from both of us.
Gus was such a huge part of our lives…in the car on vacations, at our family lake cottage, in the kitty backpack while on hikes with us, sitting next to us at the dinner table, watching us make dinner from atop a barstool at the kitchen counter, striding into hotel rooms and selecting his own bed, and anywhere and everywhere you could possibly imagine. Everywhere we look, things seem eerily empty and forlorn without him here.
We will always love and miss you, little buddy. Our hearts will never be the same.
Peace!
