  6. Anniversary: 33 and 13

33 years ago today Kelley and I got married in front of family and friends in our Atlanta back garden. Thirteen years ago today we got married again—this time legally—on a restaurant deck overlooking Puget Sound. This year we’ll be celebrating as we almost always do by going out for a lovely meal and delighting in each other’s conversation and company over good food and excellent wine.

I say almost always, because twice we’ve missed that lovely meal. Once was when Kelley was in Australia on the set of OtherLife (based on her script, which in turn is based on her novel Solitaire). And last year because she was at the vet with Charlie, who had been attacked by (we think) some kind of raptor.

Whenever I do an anniversary post I go look at what I’ve said in years past—and yesterday was absolutely sandbagged by the post about Charlie because his death still feels so very real and recent and raw. I miss that bright little spark. Fiercely.

It’s a strange thing to be feeling so sad while writing about the anniversary that makes me so glad. But life and love go on, and life is to be lived. So that’s what we’re doing today.

I’ll leave you with two new-to-you pictures of us: one taken twenty years ago or more (maybe 2003?) which we just found last week, and one taken last month when my sister was in town. Life is good.

  9. Sleepy Çaturday in Seattle

It rained overnight for the first time in…well, I don’t know. The flowers are bright and fresh but here in this household we all feel sort of sleepy and not much inclined to do any of the mountain of stuff we’re supposed to be doing.

So I think we’ll take a leaf from George’s book and just drift, gently smiling, through the day. Relaxed vibes to all.

  22. Çaturday George: Best and Bravest

Charlie has been gone 7 weeks, and several people have asked how George is doing without his brother. Simply: he’s managing. He’s eating. He’s sleeping with us at night. He is still deeply unsettled.

For the first week or two he would go out as usual, only instead of following his normal routes he would sit in places where Charlie used to sit, and wait. And look puzzled. And come in and out, in and out of the house, meowing, telling us, over and again, that something was wrong, he couldn’t find his brother. He would see the single food plate and just…yowl. It was heartbreaking for all of us.

Then for about a week he spent most of his time under the bed. He ate, but not much—just enough so that we didn’t think he was going to starve (cats can starve in surprisingly short order) and so didn’t need to take him to the vet. He wouldn’t spend time with us. He—like me—was miserable, perhaps close to depression.

For the week or so after that his routines were in flux, but for the last two weeks they’ve begun to coalesce around a different set of parameters—he eats less often but larger amounts; he won’t go outside until after 10:00 am and sometimes not until after noon; he sits on different fences, and has assumed different watch posts; he is sticking much closer to home.

He’s still very skittish. Sudden movements or loud noises from either of us send him flying. At first that was far under the bed where no one could reach him; lately, just out of the room and poised to flee farther; on very brave days just jumping then freezing, then cautiously reapproaching. He’s getting there but it’s a slow road. He relied on his brother to be the one to investigate, engage with, and certify-as-safe All The New Things. My heart aches for how brave he has to be now, every day.

But he is brave. Our Best and Bravest. And meanwhile, he has started to sit close to me on the sofa again—all while pretending not to.

He’s finding his way back. And so are we. Which means from this point all my kitty posts will be forward- and now-focused, looking to the future and enjoying the present.

  25. All The Empty Chairs

    Two empty wheelchairs

Two comfy wheelchairs, no cat—Charlie was always the chair thief. Perhaps once winter comes George may consider the warm comfort of a just-vacated wheelchair, but for now I’m guessing the memory is still strong of him having tried once or twice to take the chair only to be roundly thumped by his little brother for usurping the privilege. So he stays away. Today, every time I look at an empty wheelchair my eyes fill. I turn away. I am so fucking tired of crying.

George used to sit on the table on the back deck and leave the chair for Charlie; lately, he won’t even sit on the table.

On the kitchen deck the comfy chair was, always, Charlie’s domain—he curled up in that thing 70% of his time outdoors between April and October. One day, maybe, George will too. But I’d be surprised if it were this summer, and I wouldn’t be shocked it were never. Sigh.

    All those empty chairs…
