  1. Published Lone Coder article 176: "Are AI Coding Tools Fun or a Behaviour Addiction?"

A comment by Linus Torvalds during the AI cybersecurity news raised a new question. Some programmers use AI-assisted programming excessively while others find little value in it. Studies mentioned in this column claim these tools do not increase productivity so why do some programmers work long hours with them? Perhaps they are addicted.

  9. ‘Doom Loop’: OpenAI and Microsoft Admits LLMs Are Destroying the Web and Built on Theft: 404media.co/doom-loop-openai-a

'Executives working on AI at Microsoft and OpenAI admitted what its critics have been saying all along: Large language models are predatory pieces of technology that have been built on what a Microsoft executive called “an astonishing theft of unprecedented proportions,” and the “largest theft of labor in human history.” An internal Microsoft document said generative AI products have created a “doom loop” that is killing “the entire web.”'

  14. The scenario below is fictional (all IPs are RFC 5737 documentation ranges).

The worst moment in an investigation is realizing the logs are gone. It's tempting to conclude the attacker was better than you. That's only half true: the act of erasing evidence leaves new evidence.

This is part 2 of a series. Part 1 showed one micro-technique (recovering a deleted binary from /proc). Here is the map: seven principles every later part fits into.

    What you'll learn

    • Which traces attackers can erase, and which they can't
    • Seven principles for reading traces without getting lost
    • A 3-question audit you can run on your own servers

    Four kinds of traces

KindExamplesCan the attacker erase it?Self-reported.bash_history, app logsEasilyRuntime state/proc/<PID>/, live connectionsNot without stopping the processKernel/OS recordsauditd, Windows event logs, file ctimeNeeds privilege, and erasing leaves a recordOff-host recordscentral logs, firewall/flow logs, cloud logsOut of reach

    The seven principles

    1. Read traces from the attacker's point of view. Foothold, persistence, lateral movement, cleanup: each step has predictable places to leave marks.
    2. Know normal, then diff. Detection is mostly "difference from baseline", not "spot the weird".
    3. Traces are redundant. One action shadows several places. If one is wiped, another corroborates.
    4. Deleted and silent are evidence. A log that stops is itself data. Report "no logs" as unverified, never as safe.
    5. Normalize to UTC, build one timeline.
    6. Separate fact from inference. "ctime is 02:23" is a fact. "They got in at 02:23" is a hypothesis.
    7. Don't stop at detection. Feed findings back into design: central logging, immutability, least privilege.

    Three questions for tomorrow

    1. Are execution records sent somewhere the server itself can't erase?
    2. Can you describe your "normal admin path" (bastion, accounts, maintenance window) in writing?
    3. If a log stops, will anyone notice?

    Takeaways

Attackers can erase their own diary, but not the OS's and the network's records. Next: a file backdated to 2018 with touch, caught with one line.

  16. the nature of hands

    we are cutters, as
    a whole, and piercers;
    we
    will find bones and rocks
    to shape them;
we are turning forests into spears,
    arrows, hafts for blades.
    I look and see
    the endless belching smoke
    past the highway,
    the tower-flame of
    unscalable Cliffs; they are
    building spears, there,
    we are always building spears.
