Rubio also insisted: “No children are dying on my watch.”
That, Taher says, “is a lie.”
“I lost my son because of the funding cuts,” he says. “And it is not only me — many more children in other camps have also died helplessly from hunger, malnutrition and no medical treatment.”

We have a food pantry at the Brookland United Methodist church and we get food through direct donation, a grant from Harps, and from the Food Bank.
Almost every week we have a pickup at the Food Bank which we then have to unload and store. It can be some pretty heavy lifting.
Once a month we have a food distribution for anyone who needs food. There are other churches in Brookland who also have food pantries on other weeks and we work with them.

If I receive any additional funds from compassionate folks, after this update - I will forward funds to marginalized folks who are still in need of financial assistance to survive. I never keep extra funds donated for myself. I have & will always use anything extra to try & help others in need. This is how I was taught by my parents & it is what I practice in life. When I'm doing well, I've always shared my bounties with others.
Me & my family know very well what pure desperation for survival feels like, because we've lived it.I still remember my parents telling me, at age 7 ->
If you have a full bowl of rice & you see someone very hungry, you must give them at least 1/3 of your rice. You must never fill up your own belly, when you see others starving. You must feed them, from your own bowl. You can pray for your whole life but still be a selfish person. If you think that leaving starving people hungry, is OK. Street sweeps of the homeless are just another form of taxpayers funded, state sanctioned, social murder. These inhumane actions have never worked to alleviate homelessness crisis, nor lowered crime rates, nor have they improved our community safety as a whole. People die from street sweeps. We have desperate needs for both more social & transitional supportive housing for folks living at & below poverty lines. We have desperate community needs for mental health & addictions recovery/support services to be funded better & access to services be fast-tracked. There's long waiting lists for folks seeking help & that's been an health care issue for decades - under 2 swinging door governments. There's still too much stigma & ignorant judgements towards our most marginalized citizens.
A society that chooses to judge, ignore, dehumanize & ostracize the most marginalized folks within it, is a sick society. It really does take a village of diverse kind citizens to help heal it. You can always make a small ripple of difference to help out in your own local area 🙏

In #VictoriaBC - you get in trouble from bylaw officers if you cook/feed the poor & houseless folks in Summer. You don't get in much trouble & usually left alone in cold, freezing weather in Winter because bylaw officers won't patrol much when conditions are miserable out. I learned that from past lived experiences when trying to cook outside to feed #hungry & #houseless folks.
I wouldn't feel the need to keep trying to feed people here if our governments, & our society as a whole, didn't treat houseless folks like they're not human & not deserving of kindness, compassion & understanding. Some of us citizens have got in trouble for trying to feed people - when the people trying to punish people like me aren't doing much to help feed & house the folks who need to be fed & housed the most.
I'm not a criminal. The heartless governments & ignorant people who #stigmatize hungry, houseless folks, while doing shit all to help out, are the real criminals in our society.
I will ALWAYS try to feed the hungry, without judgements. I hope more people will also go out to feed the hungry, without judgements. We - the grassroots citizens, who care - are local humanity in action. We need to keep trying to help folks in our own communities, as much as we can. We need to keep resisting the fascists who try to destroy our efforts.
Cruel fascists are no benefit to any community. Whether they're elected officials or not. The houseless are part of all of our communities. They don't deserve to be ignored & treated like lesser than humans.

I will ALWAYS try to feed the hungry, without judgements. I hope more people will also go out to feed the hungry, without judgements. We - the grassroots citizens, who care - are local humanity in action. We need to keep trying to help folks in our own communities, as much as we can. We need to keep resisting the fascists who try to destroy our efforts.
Cruel fascists are no benefit to any community. Whether they're elected officials or not. The houseless are part of all of our communities. They don't deserve to be ignored & treated like lesser than humans.

In #VictoriaBC - you get in trouble from bylaw officers if you cook/feed the poor & houseless folks in Summer. You don't get in much trouble & usually left alone in cold, freezing weather in Winter because bylaw officers won't patrol much when conditions are miserable out. I learned that from past lived experiences when trying to cook outside to feed #hungry & #houseless folks.
I wouldn't feel the need to keep trying to feed people here if our governments, & our society as a whole, didn't treat houseless folks like they're not human & not deserving of kindness, compassion & understanding. Some of us citizens have got in trouble for trying to feed people - when the people trying to punish people like me aren't doing much to help feed & house the folks who need to be fed & housed the most.
