  3. Panicked this morning as I exited the bathroom and spotted the clock on the landing.
I was all "shit, where's the morning gone? How long was I in there?" until I realised we switched from BST to "dark and miserable till March" overnight.

Stay safe out there, people. You got an hour back!

  4. each day a graveyard

    I leave flowers as I go;
    each day a death each
day an unknown becoming known –
there was always time enough for this,
    there will always be time
to mark as we pass, there
    will be memory even
in action; there will be a
    remembrance worth remembering.

  5. It speaks volumes for Bradford's record as a Councillor for Ward 19 - Beaches - East York that his former constituents voted 65.4% for Olivia Chow, 31% for him, and 3.6% for somebody else. It would appear that the reports that he was a bad representative had more than a little truth to them.

I find this funny as I listen to CITY TV's coverage from his campaign event. As it did during the election, City is still trying to puff Brad and frame this disastrous result for him as some kind of confirmation of his greatness.

  6. I wish I could block The Columbian from search results as I try to research my voting ballot options because fuck them and their fucking paywall on fucking everything

  8. Early 3D adventure games on 80s tech: The Freescape games

As I look more into old computer gaming, everything that turns up from the British computer market seems to just be the coolest thing I've ever seen. Many are probably familiar with Elite, which was already revolutionary with its early 3D spacetrader gameplay. But one British company, Incentive Software, released a string of fully 3D, first person adventure puzzle games in the late 80s, for both 8-bit and 16-bit computers, and I don't know how I hadn't heard of it sooner.

It was done using their specially-made "Freescape" engine, one of the earliest examples of such in the field, and a name proudly flaunted on the box of each game. There were 6 such Freescape games released between 1987 and 1990, each made of rooms filled with simple 3D shapes and interactive puzzles, and they're all quite a trip to play.

Here are some screencaps of the third and fourth, "Total Eclipse" from 1988, and its 1989 sequel "Sphinx Jinx". Chosen simply just because you're an archaeologist in the 1930s exploring a pyramid to stop a pharaoh's curse, and I love temples and deserts.

You're equipped with a pistol and a constantly-draining bottle of water (and in the 16-bit versions, a flashlight as well), and your health is represented by a heartbeat-ometer. You have to face mummies, illusory rooms, and a limited amount of total keys, so multiple playthroughs and mapping the pyramid out on paper are required to find the correct path.

Because the IBM PCs hadn't caught on in the UK as much as they had in the US at this time, the DOS versions of these games was on par with the 8-bit ports, limited to only 16-color EGA graphics. So, for completion's sake, I got an Amiga emulator running to experience the game for a second time.

The sequel, Sphinx Jinx, was only available bundled with the first as part of a "Special Pack" that was only released for the 8-bit computers, and never saw the PC, Atari ST, or Amiga. So, I set up a Commodore 64 emulator, too.

However, it runs pretty damn slowly, and it's supposed to be the hardest of all the Freescape games, so it's a bit of a slough. Luckily, ScummVM recently added support for all the Freescape releases, so they all can be ran natively with higher resolution and WASD+mouse controls.

For a lot more information and screenshots of each Freescape game, here's a set of great blog posts: https://hg101.kontek.net/freescape/freescape.htm

So, a quick poll for Mastodon.social users and anyone on other instances with the new v5 design enabled (feel free to share this to reach more people):

😋 I confess to almighty Flying Spaghetti Monster and to you, my friends and comrades, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.
Forgive our sins and renew us in the Lord.
    R'Amen 🍜

🍝 The Almighty and merciful Lord, the Flying Spaghetti Monster,
grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of Quob Holy Noodle.

  14. Took the bus to my polling place and as I exited onto the sidewalk this nice young man asked to photograph me for his project. I was in plaid coat, respirator mask and face shield so I agreed. No waiver, so…
Then I went across the street to vote and there was a line! So encouraging.
Walked home on the sunny side of the street (avenue).

As others have said here, just looking at who's spending money for or against a proposition is often a pretty reliable gauge (although not always! looking at you, Planned Parenthood re prop 40)

  28. Hot on the heels of a major conference, and as I have mild prosopagnosia (face blindness), here's how you can help: if you don't have a name badge, give your full name (there's plenty of "Lee"s), or some context (we spoke about query plans last month). Not being rude, I just don't connect faces or profile pics to names easily!
