Today I went to the sandbank near Kootwijk. There was a viewing tower that was quite high above ground and I decided to paint from up there. I actually have some fear of heights so this was pretty nerve wracking. Also had to paint with the panel in the shadow all the time so the colours came put a bit funky. But i got it done and I was facing my fears at least.

C'est ce qu'on appelle « peindre dans le frais », c'est-à-dire appliquer une couleur différente dans une peinture pas encore sèche. C'est assez facile avec la peinture à l'huile qui met du temps à sécher, plus dur à l'acrylique (comme pour cette peinture-ci) qui sèche plus vite que son ombre. Il faut donc peindre plus vite que l'ombre de l'acrylique. Vous me suivez ?

Been headhunting again today. I was distracted by how shiny the model’s skin was maybe I should have painted it even shinier. Other than that, form, light all that stuff. I don’t think I enjoy black backgrounds very much anymore. Also, the paint sinks in really fast.

Went to Groningen today where apparently there is kermis going on right now. Went right into an overly ambitious view painting a rollercoaster with the iconic tower in the background. In the end, I got to fill up the panel which in and of itself is a win given the subject matter :).

Went to #maastricht today to paint a cliff face :) these are virtually non existent in the Netherlands so I got excited when I heard about this mining site that has become accessible to the public some ten years ago. I didn’t check the forecast though so it was really really hot. Next time I’ll stay at home lol!

I took two older panels and went to the woods today to make some quick studies. Trying to keep it simple and concise and I kind of like the results. I think I will make this a weekly thing for now, I really want to become a master of the forest. It’s my favorite flavor!

Went to go paint a dolmen structure (d53) in the somewhat more northern part of the Netherlands. It was a very gray day for the most part and I enjoyed painting it. The result to me kind of looks like a natural science history museum diorama background painting. Don’t know whether that’s a good thing or not.

Been using the “daluren vrij” ticket to go to Amsterdam today. I went and painted for 10 hours straight, which is a bat ridiculous. But I got a relatively big painting done so that’s good. The place I chose to paint is the small Sint Annenstraat.

Today at the portrait I tried to make simpler statements and not go with transitions. Normally I go towards transitions and more details at some point but I tried to hold myself back, trying to optimize my shapes instead. It didn’t go very well yet I think. I will look at some masters that do those better and maybe make better decisions with the next one. I really want to learn this

Trying my luck with sunlit trees again. I am happy with the sporadic markings. Though most of the time was spend deleting details that were distracting/disruptive. It’s still a daunting and impossible subject to paint. I think I should have painted a tree more up close. It’s an improvement though.
