  1. I'm encountering the same scary thing in my current total rewrite of my work in progress: characters are being left on the cutting room floor. It's fine, I know it's going to be fine, because I've done this before.

Have you ever cut or been advised to cut characters? Did you do it? Why or why not?

  2. I discovered that when I cut characters, it makes the other relationships so much clearer, but also more precious. I write #middlegrade, so I don't want to have a cast of thousands when my reader could be between 8 and 12 years old.

  3. I did, and it worked out fine. The story got better. I cut the first 2800 words of my manuscript & more or less started at chapter 3. Yeah, it was scary. But my agent told me the beginning was still too slow, and she was right. (I love Arturo, who I hope makes it back into another story of mine one day.)

  4. I'm going to talk about the hardest thing you might be asked to do to your manuscript -- cut characters. (A thread). I swear I never would have tried this with my debut FRIEND ME if I hadn't been about to go on a week-long writing retreat where I had the time to try this crazy thing.

  5. More #introduction info: I'm a former #technology #journalist from #massachusetts now in #Scotland after years in #Ireland. Keen on #tech #ethics (especially as it affects #children). Also #kidlit #scbwi #scifi #socialjustice #gardening #AI

My debut novel #friendme (#scholastic 2020) is a techno #thriller for #middlegrade about a bullied girl whose bully has a bad accident: she starts to worry that her new best friend, who she only knows online, might be responsible.

  6. Standing room only last night at launch of Justin Davies's #middleGrade adventure #HAARVILLE (Floris Books). So interesting to hear where the concept for this spooky, foggy seaside story came from. Coming to the #US this summer! The publisher and @TheEdinburghBookshop did a beautiful job hosting the event & I got to catch up with so many #kidlit pals.

  8. Today for you I have beard lichen from the laurel forest in Madeira, one of the levada walks from back in November. The air smelled so good.

I haven't been to #Dublin in years but that changes today! #Eolas social media conference in #CrokePark. First, an #Edinburgh Airport deconstructed breakfast burrito.

  10. The dwarf iris in the window box will be open in a day or two, but I find them most thrilling when they're like this, slim pencils of potential. Here with hardy pansies that have endured the winter.

  11. I'm finally accepting that deep-shade loving plants are the only thing that will grow in the border right outside my home office. So I'm digging up endless foxgloves from around the garden and replanting them here, looking forward to a beautiful June with spires of digitalis.

  12. Winter garden is on my mind because its stars -- like these #hellebores -- are looking so jolly now. Here with #salvia, #dianthus and the David Austin Crocus rose.

  13. Wintersweet (chimonanthus praecox) reliably flowers in January in my part of Scotland, and now in December, the buds are fat and promising. To me the scent is like hyacinths. I love its flowers' shredded petals and deep red centres.

  15. @geekaren @bookstodon I know I always talk about this book, but WHEN YOU REACH ME by #RebeccaStead ... feels like gorgeous historical middle grade set in the 1970s but is actually stealth #scifi

  16. When I'm working on a manuscript, the home stretch of line edits before submitting it is a crucial phase. Here's a thing I do, inspired by the revision tips given to me years ago by the brilliant Sara Grant.

What do you do in the last moments before submitting your manuscript ?

  17. @vkfarfalle @bookstodon that's an interesting problem and I suffer from the same thing when it comes to my settings – "I can't picture this" is feedback I sometimes get from early readers. If it's any use I really got a handle on plotting through Plot and Structure by #JamesScottBell and Screenplay by #SydField.

  18. US #librarians: on behalf of #authors may I ask, is there any hope of a Public Lending Right equivalent in US, as in UK & Ireland? Authors whose work is borrowed here get a yearly payment. Has this been mooted in US? I just got my PLR payment here in Scotland but something similar from US libraries would be golddust. All comments welcome -- I'm keen to learn.

  19. CW: My day job

Today I am mostly doing holiday photo shoots for the books that were shortlisted for this year's #WalterScottPrize for Historical Fiction. There's so little good light on December days, I need to do this quickly. This is the book that won, James Robertson's NEWS OF THE DEAD, but they will all get this treatment. I'm the social media manager for the prize.

  21. @wendypalmer @bookstodon for a 12-year old who loves mysteries, #JamesPonti has the wonderful CITY SPIES series with a bunch of 13-ish-year old international spies. He might like WHEN YOU REACH ME by #RebeccaStead too, and ORPHANS OF THE TIDE by #StruanMurray also great (though contains some magic.) Maybe #librarians #schoollibrarians can suggest others?
