I’m reading Ode to Salonika, edited by Renée Levine Melammed, which presents the komplas composed by Bouena Sarfatty in memory of her destroyed community of Salonika. After background chapters on pre-Shoah Salonika life in the twentieth century, I have finally reached the bilingual presentation of the poems themselves (Ladino and English on facing pages). I’m surprised by how much Ladino I can understand.
