  1. One of my client's shaded flower beds, installed earlier this season, is filling out nicely. Coleus, begonias, impatiens, and caladiums - these will all last through the end of October here in Georgia.

  2. My spring planting season finally ended on July 1st, running a bit longer this year (hence, my absence on this platform which I truly missed).

These hostas 'Praying Hands' are some of the new hostas that went into the most recent phase of an ongoing project which included the installation of over 250 new perennials. This is the third year I've spent renovating the back landscape and pond garden, and it is finally coming together.

  3. We are still struggling to do something, anything half decent with our large gardens. For the past 12 years all of our effort has been directed towards our renovation and outside was an afterthought if we we had money, time or energy.
But this garden running beside a stepped pathway to the front of our house is one bright spot in the shade. It was thrown together with no plan a decade ago and turned out OK.

  4. Second year of this shade garden. Jacob’s Ladder, sedge, phlox all looking good! #Minnesota #nativeplants #shadegarden

  5. A March bloomer and native to Japan, Stachyurus praecox 'Rubriflora', is a unique shade-garden plant, draped in a curtain of tassels before the foliage emerges. It reminds me of the plant that @eugeneparnell posted, another March bloomer, but his is a native to the Pacific North West and an evergreen: Garrya elliptica, or silk tassel tree. Take a look.

  6. I'm finally accepting that deep-shade loving plants are the only thing that will grow in the border right outside my home office. So I'm digging up endless foxgloves from around the garden and replanting them here, looking forward to a beautiful June with spires of digitalis.
