  3. It's starting to be #iris season too. Not sure what these little ones are, Siberian iris maybe. The #dianthus is "meh" this year. Centered is a marshmallow shasta #daisy that got bugs; the blooms _really_ didn't care for malathion, so they got snipped.

  4. #Dianthus is a key #herb used in #Chinese #TraditionalMedicine aka #TCM to treat #urinary difficulties. In #Western #HerbalMedicine, the entire plant is used as a bitter tonic herb that stimulates urinary system & #digestive systems. #DianthusChinensis is classified as #antibacterial, #diuretic, #emmenagogue & #febrifuge.

    Only the flower petals are edible to humans but not for your pets. You can sugar flowers into candy. Or add petals to salads.

    Nadeshiko (撫子) are counted as a fall flower, but because they can bloom from as early as late spring, they're also known as 'everlasting summer' (常夏).

    'Nade' (撫) means 'caress'...people considered the flowers so beautiful that you could not help but touch them.

    Dianthus symbolize cheerfulness, innocence, constancy and feminine beauty. In Edo times the flower was used in New Year decorations that followed a year of natural disasters and misfortune.
