CW: Discussion about feminism & masculinity in kink-friendly queer spaces
I have recently been thinking about how we treat certain personality and character traits in our part of the generally progressive queer & kink friendly t4t subculture (you know which one I mean).
Traditionally feminine traits like shyness, agreeability, submission, passivity, vulnerability and so on are generally normalised, praised and protected. The 'shy nonverbal subby trans girl' archetype is included in the subculture without any issues. I mean, look at fedi here.
Meanwhile, traditionally masculine traits like confidence, extroversion, assertiveness, directness and agency, or even just masculine dress styles, are generally viewed with a general undertone of distrust and 'problematic'-ness. I feel like being masculine and queer means you need to prove your 'safety' a lot more, and you are held to a much higher standard. Often, the vibe is quite akin to "you're one of the good ones, but tread lightly".
And I mean, I totally get why in a world like ours, it works that way. Dominant traits aren't sociopolitically neutral and they don't exist in a vacuum. All of kink is aesthetically inspired by harmful hierarchies and power dynamics, and in a world where those are alive and well, it is difficult to fully separate the two.
But I feel like it is not sustainable when it comes to simultaneously having a lively kink subculture.
Most kink dynamics obviously need someone who expresses the former set of traits, i. e. a dominant person. A sub needs a dom, typically. But when you generally view dominant personality traits as "one step before problematic" or as inherently predatory, you're pushing them out of the community. If they have to apologise for their existence around you, why would they enter an intense intimate emotional dynamic with you?
Perhaps that is where the so-called "dom shortage" comes from. Maybe our spaces are just too distrustful of dominant personality types, for better or worse reasons.
(I mean, I am a dominant-leaning switch, so I have my own thoughts on it. I'm just curious what others think!)

A friend of mine just launched Kosmo, a new #fediverse service out of Korea, built around the dōjin (同人) scene: fan works, fanzines, that whole self-published creative culture. It's live now at kos.moe, in open beta and Korean-language only for now.
It speaks #ActivityPub, so you get the basics: posting, following, boosting. It also has emoji reactions, and one account can hold several public profiles. They say profile tags are coming next, meant to express something about a profile's identity and usable for search and muting too.
It's still early, and they'd genuinely appreciate feedback from anyone who gives it a try.

The white wellness ecosystem, fostering family-friendly ‘white wellbeing’
The Normalisation of the Far-Right"White nationalism, or any other supremacist or ethno-nationalist movement, usually harkens back to some romanticised idea of the past. The past when [white people] 'had power'. The past when the community 'was pure'. The past, when everything was good."
"Built into that is usually the idea of a romanticisation of more traditional ways of doing things, of escaping from modern society, which is usually described in these communities as degenerate … as unwholesome. So the purity, the return-to-nature found in the wellness movement has an inherent appeal to many groups [including] white nationalists."
"....The wellness industry and white nationalism have a common thread of 'purity' and cleanliness. 'We want to focus on having picnics and outdoor meetings and public events that you can bring your family to, where we see our healthy white children running around and being happy, and other people will look at us and see how great and friendly and family oriented and not scary [we are], and not wearing hoods and not sporting swastikas.'""
"Wellness does play into that, in part, because if you're walling yourself off from the rest of the world, you do need your organic coffee and your bar of soap and your hair tonic and whatnot. And these businesses help to create an economic base."

How do you show your social value in a way that’s instantly recognizable?
"The meaning ascribed to race in the nightclub setting was related to perceptions of safety. The bouncers (many of whom are Black or Latino) claimed that letting Black or Latino Americans in might jeopardize safety at the club. However, Rivera says she saw fights between white customers frequently."

i get why people feel a certain 'betrayal' over these last couple of years of basically everyone in tech seemingly 'switching sides' over AI.
i get it. people, communities, companies, projects that you previously respected and connected with now turning heel and becoming something you no longer recognise, just over this one temptation.
but consider.
it's likely that it isn't a betrayal, but that it's just now occuring to you that the tech world has always been fundamentally made of these same right-wing men with merely a subversive aesthetic on top. they have always been that way.
maybe FOSS hasn't been a grand idealist fight for freedom, but just the tech variation of "don't let these hollywood elites tell me what to do" all along.
maybe "ugh, literally everyone in tech uses AI nowadays, and who isn't is lying" isn't a shitty pro-AI lie to make you feel left behind, but it is actually true, but actually a scathing indictment of the tech world.
maybe tech has always been a fundamentally right-wing space by design, and us carving our own progessive niches is an illusion. perhaps "hacking" as a hobby and culture is inherently supportive of societal hierarchies like that.
and maybe we should now reflect on why and how the general progressive online transfeminine subculture has been so intertwined with the extremely male tech world, its culture and its prevalent toxic masculinity. why your average fedi trans girl has identical hobbies, interests and personality traits as your average male incel 4channer tech bro.
what the fact that the tech world has been so integral to our spaces says about us and about misogyny in our community. why are transfem spaces almost always hacker/programming/tech spaces as well? what does that say about us in a world where tech is increasingly a right-wing identifier?
perhaps we need to analyse what impact computers, the internet and tech culture have had on the culture of queer and neurodivergent communities. how much of our culture is techbro culture and we're only now realising it?

Update from my partner (who you should totally follow)
Reblog via joelleI’m just going to type out a quick update here for the sheer hell of it. There has been a lot going on in my personal and professional life at the moment, and I am deep in the process of Getting My Shit Together. Because of this, it is difficult to have the spoons for things like blog posts and writing of my own. My job is in the category of social work and social services. It is emotionally demanding and requires a lot of physical work as well. I go in at 3pm and get back home anywhere from 10 to 11 pm. Sometimes I collapse in a heap on the bed. Other times I have enough energy to play some video games.
I really enjoy playing Final Fantasy XIV, the MMORPG one. It provides me with enough escapism to last a whole week if I can fit in a hefty play session. Lately, I have even had a few people to play with – including my beloved partner. I have also been playing a bit of Palworld and The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC (second chapter). I believe Palworld will have enough longevity to justify the purchase (it’s a meaty game). I know I will get my money’s worth from The Legend of Heroes series as a whole. Pokemon is a series I have largely grown out of though. It is interesting to hear how so many adults around me continue to find joy in it, Gamefreak must be doing something right. But for me I would rather be playing something like FFXIV or Palworld (or the open world Zelda games) which feel like there are less barriers to having a chill time. Being a working adult has changed my gaming habits over time. It is a death by a thousand cuts situation which has killed off my interest in most video games that I used to enjoy.
To fill the void left by Total Devotion to Gaming, I have picked up some books and magazines again. I also go to a weekly film club type thing at a local theater. I am (finally) working my way through Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace and have progressed to about the halfway point. I have also subscribed to Harper’s and invested in a membership at Barnes & Noble which gives me access to other magazines. Today I picked up the newest issue of The Atlantic and a special magazine that covers the history of Goth/post punk music and the subculture around it(surprising no one who knows me). I look forward to diving into these this weekend. This maturation into a “Magazine Adult” feels uncomfortable to me, as someone who always cast aspersions at such people when I was younger. Nonetheless I have accepted that I am a cultured and reading person who needs to keep that part of my brain fed and happy or it will become unruly and difficult to manage.
This is my current lifestyle. My partner and I just finished watching through all of The Wire, which is still my favorite TV show of all time. After a rewatch, I have some nitpicks but it manages to balance a lot of spinning plates at once. The landing at the end of the series is rocky, but it’s fitting for a show that covers early 21st century American life. It goes hand in hand with Infinite Jest quite well too, I recommend experiencing both alongside each other.
I am off to work but should have more to say soon. Until then, don’t neglect your media diet. Consuming blindly leads to disappointment. Just because you played the last six Resident Evil games the year they came out, doesn’t mean you have to plunk down $70 out of obligation in 2026. Question your hobbies and interests, spending the time the way you really want to.
That’s what I tell myself these days.

So, hola a todes, adiós #brainrot

Verpackt ist das Ganze in schrammeligen Punk. Fetzt! 💯
Schön, dass ihr dabei seid!
