“The real gold is not gold, after all, but the land itself”

Kaitlin P. Reed, "Settler Cannabis: From Gold Rush to Green Rush in Indigenous Northern California" (U Washington Press, 2023) >>

  6. The white wellness ecosystem, fostering family-friendly ‘white wellbeing’
    The Normalisation of the Far-Right

"White nationalism, or any other supremacist or ethno-nationalist movement, usually harkens back to some romanticised idea of the past. The past when [white people] 'had power'. The past when the community 'was pure'. The past, when everything was good."

"Built into that is usually the idea of a romanticisation of more traditional ways of doing things, of escaping from modern society, which is usually described in these communities as degenerate … as unwholesome. So the purity, the return-to-nature found in the wellness movement has an inherent appeal to many groups [including] white nationalists."

"....The wellness industry and white nationalism have a common thread of 'purity' and cleanliness. 'We want to focus on having picnics and outdoor meetings and public events that you can bring your family to, where we see our healthy white children running around and being happy, and other people will look at us and see how great and friendly and family oriented and not scary [we are], and not wearing hoods and not sporting swastikas.'""

"Wellness does play into that, in part, because if you're walling yourself off from the rest of the world, you do need your organic coffee and your bar of soap and your hair tonic and whatnot. And these businesses help to create an economic base."

  11. Kunst-prosesjon-invitasjon 16.12 i Oslo:

  16. Just sitting on the bench and shelling almonds. It's very relaxing, actually. I have time to think about things. You know, a UBI would be a great way to promote people growing their own food and helping the environment, reducing carbon and promoting healthy diets, edging towards that decentralized, decolonized life many of us want. It's part of a different economy, one based on valuing well-being and sanity, adjusting yourself to the seasons, not the demands making profits for the few, and so only the few have time to for this.

  18. Today I stopped by and chatted with one of the old timers and original #Humboldt #BackToTheLand-ers and an OG #WeedFarmer.

He gave me these seeds to try to germinate. They are from 2017. He quit cultivating in 2019. These are his personal line that he's been cultivating since he arrived.

They were originally brought to Humboldt by others who made a botanical expedition to Afghanistan in 1976 to bring back so called "Indica" varieties that ripened earlier and would be more suited to Humboldt County's fall rains than the tropical "sativa" varieties people grew from "bag seeds" in weed that came from Mexico or Columbia.

These seeds have a long story. Preserving and spreading these genetics and the stories of the people who cared for them is part of our mission.

We'll be germinating these now and growing some small plants outdoors this summer so we can make fresh seeds and test the finished flower for potency. We hope to offer them as starts to growers next season.

  19. We’ve been above freezing for 2 days, the roads are slush and ice, the snowpack has slid from the eastern roof, and yet this monument to #Winter remains at the corner of my cabin. Not sure I can drive out successfully today, will wait till tomorrow. #Okanogan #BackToTheLand

  24. IS everyone in the western world, in their totally pampered life style just going to fall over and die when the shit hits the fan? Can't do this! Can't do that! It's not safe! That's yucky! My hands will get dirty! I don't like the smell! I could never do that!
I swear to god half the people i know WOULD fucking die if they had to live the way i live by choice. I kinda feel bad for them. Sort of.

  25. I'm going to buy some land, build weird houses, grow a garden, have workshops and make things. I'm looking for other people who have similar ideas and want to stay in a weird house and make things with me.

  26. @wuhei @wolftune @aral I note also that monasteries were created with some of the same goals you posit here, as were the #BackToTheLand communes on the 1960s/70s. Democratic pirate ships too (#both HakimBey and#DavidGraeber have written about that history). There's a lot to be learned from these experiments (both their successes and failures) before running them again.
