I don't think #antiai folks are necessarily simpletons.
Though many of them are.
Some really smart folk are anti-Ai.
Even by the broad definition some #aiboosters are anti ai.
Leahy, Hinton, Tegmark.Short story long.
It's #Aianxiety, I know, I had it 4 years ago, when most folks were laughing at me, there even was a period where the derogatory term was #aiDoomer
No one sane these days is denying the danger presented by Ai.
On the other hand there is a whole bunch of folks who are anti Ai and are simpletons...
... But they would be simpletons on any subject -

No it’s fucking not a useful tool! Playing around in shit is still playing around in shit, no matter how you cut that cake.
Experienced or not you are still creating slop and will walk away smelling like crap.

My latest signal on how the anti-AI situation is going (and this isn’t about BlueSky) …
There’s talk over there now about how people are drifting to X/Twitter because BlueSky is too #antiAI and all the “useful”/“interesting” #AI talk and engagement is over on X/twitter.
There are probably a few feelings to be had about this.
It’s useful I think to highlight I’ve seen the same here.
It’s also useful to highlight what I think people aren’t recognising enough … that this AI thing may well be a significant fracturing of society. Its very nature is to affect and be involved in many/most/all aspects of society, and yet there are strong feelings about it because of its deep implications.
A society that differs so strongly on something like that is a fractured one. More fractured, I suspect, than people recognise.
If the groups were large enough and their commitments strong enough, we’d get religious schism style animosity. Which may come.
In reality, I think us anti-AI folk are just going to have to get used to living in a cyberpunk dystopia that everyone sucks in like cigarettes.

Adversarial Generative Perturbations
Only works against very specific machine learning algorithms.
Having conversed with some heatedly #antiai folk, they don't consider ML to be 'true ai'
Though I consider that line of arguments a folly and distraction.As a fun experiment use the phrase "Adversarial Generative Perturbation" in conversation and witness some humans brains short and reboot 😁
Maybe human and machine brains share similar vulnerabilities 😁 -

every year or so the boomers post some shit like "I do not consent to Mark Zuckerberg using my data, post this on tour story too or else Mark Zuckerberg will use your data"
this year it's Meta AI flavored and my friends are convinced that by posting something on their story they can opt of AI training
I used to use this opportunity evangelize the fediverse but I've pretty much given up, the sheep would rather use Instagram and believe there's a magic spell that protects you from the zuck and AI

CW: AI discourse & ableism
in the face of AI discourse, a lot of my regular progressive friends suddenly started to sound uncomfortably conservative, and that's beginning to worry me as an autistic person
like no dude, …
- it's not okay to ridicule or shame people who don't like social interactions.
- even moreso, enjoying social situations or interacting with others is not a prerequisite to being a human person.
- doing work the difficult, manual way is not more ethical, honourable, human or valuable than using assistive technology.
- making art is not the ultimate purpose of humanity, and people who do not make/enjoy/consume art are not lesser humans.
- "just go outside and talk to people" is not an option for everyone nor is it inherently valiant or morally better than not doing so.
- not everyone can "just write/draw/do it yourself".
- using a computer is not an indicator of being a creep, a loser or a failure.
- there is nothing superior or holy or pure about humanity.
note how none of these things mention generative AI at all? i made no statements at all about whether I think generative AI use is good or bad or whether it's appropriate in these situations.
I just listed a bunch of obviously ableist statements and behaviours I see people make constantly now in the context of AI.
the thing is, it doesn't matter whether you're using these in a conversation about generative AI, your arguments still carry some awful implications.

idk when @waterfox.net became pro-AI. Being a soft fork, it wasn't free of Mozilla's slop, but issues INHERENT to "#AI" (diffusion/large language models) were seemingly grasped and considered.
One more "#foss" project lost to the world-killing theft machine. :(
