  3. If you enjoy crafty videos on YouTube or just love a pretty book, I highly recommend Dennis of Four Keys Book Arts and his Project Hail Andy series - Andy Weir's three novels all rebound in beautiful complimenting covers. Fair warning, though, the series is two and a half hours long. And once you've watched it, you'll then want to watch his incredible work on Dune. And pretty soon you won't have time to actually read anything.

  10. SLEEP IS FUNDAMENTAL
    TO EVERYTHING ELSE 💎

    In sleep, your body self-repairs.

    Your brain restores itself.

    And your nervous system settles.

If sleep isn’t coming easily, try five or ten minutes of conscious breathing.

    Draw a long, slow in-breath.

Then let the out-breath be even longer.

    Keep going.

For me, Ocean Breath is the doorway into deep, restful sleep.

Never underestimate a good night’s sleep.

    Everything else depends on it.

  12. SO I SLEEP 💎

I've been doing evening #Ocean Breath just before sleep for about a #year now.

I look forward to getting into the #zone every #night.

For the past two nights, I've started my usual 30 to 50 minutes.

    A few minutes later...

    I fall into a #deep, #sound sleep.

A few months ago, I would have forced #myself to stay #awake and complete the round.

    “I haven't finished my practice.”

Now, though, my body says, “Sleep.”

    So I sleep.

The purpose was never to complete 30 to 50 minutes.

The purpose was to arrive at peace.

Perhaps some practices don't need to carry us all the way across a threshold.

Perhaps they only need to bring us to the #door.

Then life, knowing what is needed, quietly takes over.

Habits: How to Build Positive Ones, Break Negative Ones, and Transform Your Life

What if I told you that the small, repetitive actions you take each day play a crucial role in shaping your entire life? Your habits influence everything—from your productivity and health to your relationships and happiness. Recognizing the power of these habits can inspire you to take meaningful action.

The good news is that with the right approach—combining modern psychology with ancient wisdom—you can rewire your habits and transform your life completely. In this blog, we will explore the science behind habits, learn from ancient traditions, and provide you with the tools to build the habits you want while eliminating those you don’t.

What Are Habits, and Why Do They Matter?

Habits are automatic behaviors wired into your brain through repetition. They allow your mind to operate on autopilot, freeing up mental energy for other tasks. Think of habits as shortcuts your brain creates to make life easier. For example:

    • Brushing your teeth every morning? Habit.

    • Reaching for your phone as soon as you wake up? Habit.

    • That 3 p.m. craving for a sugary snack? Yep, habit.

The problem is, not all habits are helpful. Some propel us forward (exercising daily, saving money), while others hold us back (procrastination, scrolling endlessly on social media).

The Psychology of Habits: The Habit Loop

Modern psychology explains habits through the habit loop, a concept popularized by Charles Duhigg in his book, *The Power of Habit*. The habit loop consists of three parts:

    1. Cue: The trigger that initiates the habit (e.g., feeling stressed).

    2. Routine: The behavior that follows (e.g., eating junk food).

    3. Reward: The benefit you gain from the behavior (e.g., temporary stress relief).

By understanding the habit loop, you can feel more empowered to change your habits—either by building better ones or breaking bad ones—boosting your confidence in the process.

What Ancient Wisdom Teaches Us About Habits

Ancient traditions offer timeless wisdom that can support your discipline and self-awareness, helping you feel more grounded and confident in your journey.

    1. The Stoics on Self-Discipline

The Stoic philosophers of Ancient Greece and Rome believed in the power of self-discipline. Marcus Aurelius, for example, reminded himself daily to act in accordance with his values rather than his impulses. Stoics believed that controlling your actions was the key to a virtuous and fulfilling life.

Application: Practice mindfulness by pausing before acting. Ask yourself, “Is this action aligned with my values?”

    2. Buddhism and Mindfulness

Buddhism emphasizes mindfulness—being fully present in the moment. When you’re mindful, you become aware of your habits and can consciously choose better actions. Instead of reacting to cravings or triggers, mindfulness helps you observe them without judgment.

Application: When you feel the urge to indulge a bad habit, pause and observe the feeling. Breathe deeply and let the craving pass.

    3. Ayurveda and Daily Rhythms

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of health, stresses the importance of daily routines (dinacharya) to align your body and mind with natural rhythms. For example, waking up at sunrise, eating meals at consistent times, and practicing gratitude all cultivate positive habits.

Application: Create a consistent daily routine that supports your physical and mental well-being.

    How to Build Positive Habits

Building habits isn’t about willpower—it’s about systems and strategies. Here’s how you can create lasting positive habits:

    1. Start small with tiny habits that feel almost effortless to help you feel hopeful and confident in your ability to make lasting change.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to change too much too quickly. Instead, start with tiny habits that feel almost effortless. For example:

    • Want to exercise? Start with one push-up a day.

    • Want to journal? Write just one sentence.

Why? Small habits are easier to sustain and build momentum over time.

    2. Anchor New Habits to Existing Ones

This is called habit stacking, a concept from James Clear’s Atomic Habits. Link your new habit to something you already do regularly. For example:

    • After brushing your teeth, meditate for 2 minutes.

    • After making your morning coffee, write down three things you’re grateful for.

The existing habit acts as a cue for the new one.

    3. Make It Easy and Accessible

Reduce friction to make your new habit easier to adopt. For example:

    • Lay out your workout clothes the night before.

    • Keep healthy snacks at eye level in the fridge.

The easier the habit, the more likely you are to stick with it.

    4. Reward Yourself

Your brain craves rewards, so associate your habit with something positive. After completing your habit, treat yourself to something simple, like listening to your favorite song or enjoying a cup of tea.

    5. Use Visual Cues and Tracking

Track your progress to stay motivated. For example, use a calendar to mark each day you complete your habit. Seeing your streak grow reinforces the behavior.

    How to Break Negative Habits

Breaking bad habits requires disrupting the habit loop. Sometimes this can be harder than we think. Here’s how to get started breaking those bad habits:

    1. Identify the Cue

Pay attention to what triggers your bad habit. Is it boredom? Stress? A certain time of day? Once you identify the cue, you can take steps to avoid or address it.

    2. Replace the Routine

You can’t simply eliminate a habit—you need to replace it with a healthier alternative. For example:

    • Instead of snacking when stressed, try deep breathing or going for a walk.

    • Instead of scrolling on your phone at night, read a book.

    3. Make It Harder to Indulge

Increase friction for bad habits. For example:

    • Delete apps that waste your time.

    • Don’t keep junk food in the house.

The harder it is to engage in the habit, the less likely you’ll do it.

    4. Reflect on the Consequences

Take time to reflect on how the habit impacts your life. Write down the costs—physical, emotional, and mental. Sometimes, simply becoming aware of the harm a habit causes is enough to motivate change.

    5. Seek Support

Don’t underestimate the power of community. Surround yourself with people who support your goals and hold you accountable.

    Habits Shape Your Life

Photo by Bich Tran on Pexels.com

Habits might feel small and insignificant in the moment, but over time, they compound to create massive change. By building habits that align with your goals and values—and breaking those that don’t—you can transform your life in ways you never imagined. It just takes one step at a time. Don’t let the what-ifs and the “I doubt I’ll make it”… Just commit to one day. Start there.

So, ask yourself: What small change can I make today that my future self will thank me for?

And remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step—or in this case, a single habit.

Ready to take the first step? It’s time to shape your habits and, in turn, shape your future.

  16. Sunday Things #1

There’s something about Sundays that feels different. The week slows down just enough to catch its breath, and for a little while, everything feels a little quieter. This week wasn’t the easiest. A sinus infection and a stomach bug forced me to slow down in ways I didn’t want to. I missed work, spent more time resting than doing, and was reminded that sometimes our bodies make the decisions for us. It wasn’t the week I had planned, but it was the week I needed. ☕ This Week’s […]
