Bauhaus sind eine der Bands in meiner Sammlung, die am häufigsten gecovert haben. Telegram Sam (T. Rex) habe ich schon vorgestellt und auch Songs von Brian Eno („Third Uncle“), John Cale („Rosegarden Funeral Of Sores“) , The Velvet Underground („I’m Waiting For The Man“ als Liveversion mit Nico), Dead Can Dance („Severance“) und Norman Greenbaum („Spirit In The Sky“) haben sie nachgespielt. Außerdem haben sie sich „Ziggy Stardust“ von David Bowie vorgenommen. Dazu habe ich auch eine schöne Geschichte im Netz gefunden, wie diese Coverversion entstanden ist.
Zu den vielen Einflüssen von Bauhaus gehörte auch David Bowie und häufig wurden sie in Reviews mit ihm verglichen. Kevin Haskins (Drums) und Daniel Ash (Gitarre) sollen im Studio aus Spaß „Ziggy Stardust“ gejamt haben, während ein Tonband mitlief. Die Idee fanden die Musiker so gut, dass sie beschlossen, das Lied bei einer BBC Radiosession von David „Kid“ Jensen zu spielen, die am 01.07.1982 erstmals gesendet wurde. Im Oktober 1982 wurde die Aufnahme als achte Single mit der B-Seite „Third Uncle“ veröffentlicht. Es wurde die einzige Bauhaus-Single, die es in England in die Top20 geschafft hat (Platz 15).
Wie schon bei „Telegram Sam“ haben Bauhaus auch „Ziggy Stardust“ ihren Post-Punk-Stempel aufgedrückt. Die Geschwindigkeit wurde etwas erhöht, die Gitarre ist härter und verzerrter und auch der Bass tritt deutlicher hervor als beim Original. Gesanglich ist Peter Murphy schon noch nah an Bowie, paßt sich aber der Härte seinen Mitmusikern an. Außerdem scheint er Ziggy Stardust mehr zu verkörpern als zu besingen, was sich auch im Musikvideo zeigt. Hier performt er teilweise in einem Käfig und wird am Ende vom Publikum vereinnahmt und in Stoff gewickelt weggetragen. Für mich eine ideale visuelle Umsetzung des Themas. Das Video wurde im August 1982 in den Katakomben unter Camden Town (London) gedreht, eine sehr passende Location.
Übrigens soll der bekannte BBC-DJ John Peel die Bauhaus-Version nicht gemocht haben. In seinen Jahrescharts 1982 belegte Ziggy den 14. Platz und er soll kommentiert haben, dass er die Attraktion davon nie voll verstanden habe. Für mich haben Bauhaus aus Ziggy Stardust einen perfekten Bauhaus-Song gemacht.
Perfekt finde ich auch das Cover der Single, auf dem dem Bauhaus-Logo, das ja ein Gesicht darstellt, das rot-blaue Blitz-Makeup verpaßt wurde, dass David Bowie in seiner Rolle als Aladdin Sane getragen hatte und das auch mit Ziggy Stardust in Verbindung gebracht wird.

The David Bowie Centre, which houses Bowie's personal archive of 90,000 items, is now open at the V&A East Storehouse in London. @RollingStone shares 13 highlights from the collection including the contact sheet for the "Aladdin Sane" cover, the Ziggy Stardust asymmetric catsuit, the stylophone used on "Space Oddity" and some original Bowie artwork.

I couldn’t find that one, but I DID find this, a dub take on David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust.
Another really fun reggae treatment of one of the great albums of all time.Along with this, I also bought their version of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, which I’ll get to and post later this weekend.

Fifty years ago today David Bowie killed Ziggy Stardust live on stage at the Hammersmith Odeon.
At the time fans thought he was retiring entirely.
Luckily this was not the case and he continued to push boundaries for many years, continually renewing his earthly frame - as well as bringing inspiration, and pleasure, to lots of little children, like me, who were not of the worlds they were currently inhabiting, and who dreamed of being free -
