Candy Slice Group, “Gimme Mick” (Saturday Night Live, Feb 17 1979)

Patti Smith’s music and words are about the closest thing to religion in my life, so it’s with mixed feelings that I give you this excerpt from SNL’s “Rock Against Yeast” skit in which Gilda Radner reprises her Candy Slice character who had appeared first earlier that season, when Patti was at her commercial peak.

The skit takes aim at rock benefit concerts, punk rock culture, rock stardom in general, and here, Patti Smith in particular (with a side of Mick Jagger).

(Video cued to begin at Gilda's segment at 5:32 but it doesn't seem to be behaving when run within Mastodon.)

It was the first album to feature guitarist Bob Welch and the first with Christine McVie as a full, credited band member.

  31. STEVE MARTIN AND THE TOOT UNCOMMONS
    King Tut
    1978 Canada 7” single

A little whimsy and nostalgia to end my night before bed.

I remember watching an old re-run of SNL as a kid where Steve Martin was dressed in pharaoh garb performing this ridiculous song. I remember saying “What the hell was THAT?!?!”

The “uncommons” are actually members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and that SNL performance was where this was born; a completely ridiculous novelty song written about the Treasures Of Tutankhamun travelling exhibit that toured through American cities for three years (1976-1979).

Steve Martin is a fucking genius.

The Who, “The Kids Are Alright” soundtrack, 1979

I encountered this film at the height of my Who mania, and it was EVERYTHING to me. It has grainy black-and-white footage of early gigs, TV appearances including the moment on the Smothers Brothers when Keith destroyed Pete’s hearing with explosives (not a metaphor), performances at The Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus and at Woodstock, the video for “Success Story,” an outstanding deep cut of John’s (with the studio recording from “Who By Numbers," not included on the soundtrack album), their last appearance with Keith at Shephardson Studios, staged expressly for the film, and more. What it didn't have is the song “The Kids Are Alright.” (Seems they’ve added it onto the later DVD and Blu-ray releases behind additional closing credits, but I liked their little joke better.)

One of the best segments of the film/selections on the album, and itself somewhat in keeping with the “kid” theme, is their performance of Mose Allison’s “Young Man’s Blues.” The attitude of the original was already pure punk; in The Who’s hands, this jazz/blues piano piece becomes muscular, even menacing.

    They fucking kill it.

  34. Anyone remember Annie Haslam and Renaissance? They were a part of my teen years listening to Album Oriented Radio (AOR) ... I would get excited when one of their songs would come on - which was rare because they tended to be 8 minute long art-rock numbers. I listen to her now and think how she paved the way for Kate Bush, Stevie Nicks, even Heart - but her music is largely forgotten. And I just discovered that she is still out there singing and making music ... at 77! #rememberlegends #nowplaying #listenup #music #musicworld #mixtape #randomplay #nowhearthis #simsongs #anniehaslam #renaissance #carpetofthesun #70smusic

    The word is Jam

#Funkadelic “Get Off Your Ass and Jam” from “Let’s Take It To The Stage,” 1975

I’m sorry, do you need me to explain this to you? Check your pulse.

Sure sure, go read about #GeorgeClinton’s time as a #TinPanAlley songwriter, the seasoned session musicians that he joined with his old #BarberShop’s #DooWop group, the #Parliaments, psychedelicized by dropping massive amounts of #acid, funkafied à la #JamesBrown, to form Funkadelic. and how, possibly with a dose of #SunRa, definitely with a big hit of #StarTrek, he helped define what we now call #Afrofuturism
but I find it more telling that a very rock/punk guy I knew who used to put on dorm parties would put this track at the end of every party mix. Twice.

Because, as #Parliament, the other incarnation of Clinton’s band, would soon proclaim: WE WANT THE #FUNK.
