  1. Heard It Through the Grapevine: A Greening Miracle Poetry & Oil Painting | Abstract Realism Pop Art by Neisha Landers

Long ago, they buried the truth beneath the bitter frost.

Bound within the suffocating grip of night.

They paved it with concrete, assuming all was lost. And locked the world in silent stone, exiled from the light.

But the Earth cried out with anguish,

    planting a radical seed.

    Sowed it,

And waited in the quiet dark for the water it would need.

Beneath the breaking sun It stirred against the shadows. A brilliant pulse within the dirt .

    The waking had begun.

Fierce and bright, the sprouting roots shot boldly through the deep. Calling to the warriors who lingered in their sleep.

Upward through the rigid steel, the greening miracle grew.

Drenched in the dew of morning’s liquid gold. The outlaw climbed towards the sky with rustling leaves. And wrapped healing tendrils around the systems, they weaved.

It parted clouds, scattering all woven fears.

The radiant dawn’s love rose fierce, free and unbound, their decree with ancient wisdom.

Exactly where our waking souls were always meant to be…

  3. Dziś obchodzimy rocznicę urodzin Roya Lichtensteina, urodzonego 27 października 1923 roku. To jeden z ojców chrzestnych pop-artu, słynny z obrazów przypominających komiksy i eksperymentowania z kulturą masową. „Whaam!” albo „Drowning Girl” to klasyki XXI-wiecznego spojrzenia na sztukę.

🛠️ 🎨 Joseph’s Machines by Joseph Herscher: kinetic artist expert at building Rube Goldberg machines, chain reactions and other completely useless contraptions. A Rube Goldberg machine is a machine that does a simple task in an overly complicated way. 😂

Please, please, please, let this be my Christmas gift!!! 🎄

  5. Meanwhile in the #artworld...

The extent to which #RoyLichtenstein depended on (or 'stole' if you prefer) #comicbook art (and #artists) is now much clearer.

We've always known that RL sometimes 'appropriated' comic book imagery for his iconic #PopArt works, but the newly realised extent of dependence on the work of others, is now reviving the question:

at what point does appropriation become theft?

This may well turn out to be a quantity issue, not a quality one

  6. Some quotes from a Washington Post article about the #documentary "WHAAM! BLAM! Roy Lichtenstein and the Art of Appropriation", highlighting the controversy surrounding Roy Lichtenstein's work:

«I find that his painting rather resembles something that’s been slavishly traced without understanding, rather than taking an underdrawing and enhancing or changing it or giving different emphasis. It seems to me the linework is coarse and devalued by the somewhat limpid way in which he applies it. I certainly would rather look at large reproductions of the originals, because they’ve got an honesty and they have got a function in the artmaking.»
    — "Watchmen" co-creator Dave Gibbons on #RoyLichtenstein's #PopArt work.

«“The real story is, a lot of these comic-book artists had college degrees and just happened to fall into doing something else instead of painting in a studio — they had a different passion in their lives,” [David Barsalou, who maintains a Flickr account, titled "Deconstructing Roy Lichtenstein"] tells The Post. “It’s just a shame they didn’t get the recognition, like the case of Russ Heath. That’s really sad to me.”»

«“What Lichtenstein did was to ‘elevate’ popular art — the comic book — from its cheap, 10-cent origins to the world of gallery art, which is transformative, but more than a little snotty and snobby,” ["Zippy the Pinhead" creator Bill Griffith] says, “especially if one denies or avoids referring to the source.”»

Personally I feel that while the idea of subverting the snobby artwork world where plenty of worthwhile works aren't considered #art is laudable, Lichtenstein's approach does more harm than good by not crediting the source material, and not sharing the fruits of his labour with those whose shoulders and backs he stood on. With how much his work ended up going for, I'd say it all ended up being subverted into just the thing he might've intended to subvert.
