At a "Witches Fair" in Emneth, where at least one stand in three has some clearly 3D printed items (generally with little or no further finishing, perhaps a spray of paint.). IDK if a witches fair counts as mainstream, but it is interesting to observe the spread of the tech.... thankfully despite quite some overlap with the Steampunk fair we found ladt year, I have so far not seen any GenAI image horrors. #GenAI — not approved of by witches?
I guess this means #3DPrinting is #witchery?
Somebody has a big printer! I have printer envy. 😅

Mezzrow – Embrace the Awakening Review
By Dr. A.N. Grier
Two years ago, I reviewed Mezzrow’s comeback record, Summon Thy Demons—a return that was thirty-three fucking years in the making. Being that they only had one record before their 2023 comeback, I can’t say they’ve left a lasting legacy on the Swedish thrash genre—especially with so many legends that dominated the Swethrash space. With age and wisdom, it appears this quintet is looking to make an impact decades after the heydays of this unique flavor of thrash came and went. The energy, since the release of Summon Thy Demons, must continue to surge in their veins because I’m back to deliver a review of this year’s Embrace the Awakening. While none of their albums are terrible by any means, will the ‘third-times-the-charm’ bring Mezzrow the breakout success they seek?
After unloading three decades of bent-up riffage with their return, Mezzrow has cut the fat with this newest release, reducing the amount of output by fifteen minutes. This move is good for the band because they’ll continue to throw everything they have at a song, but without exhausting their listeners with the vast amount of content. Trimmed to a tight eight tracks, Embrace the Awakening delivers everything from simple thrashers meant to pummel and retreat to others that fill every nook and cranny of living space with all kinds of trinkets. Always with a dark, sinister tone in their songwriting, this new record sees them following familiar territory, combining Bay Area thrash with Swethrash influences like Sodom, Witchery, and At the Gates, to deliver a maelstrom of thrashy licks, melodic choruses, and adventurous solo work. Time to awaken deez nutz.
Embrace the Awakening gets rolling in a classic thrash-metal style with “Architects of the Silent War,” marching through an intro that builds and builds on itself before settling into a solid, sinister groove. When we arrive at the chorus, it ends up being a solid effort with plenty of gang shouts but not a lot of memorability. Which also applies to the new riff change on the back half. While not as strong an opener as the one on the previous album, the rest of the front half of Embrace the Awakening is banging. “Sleeping Cataclysm” opens with some killer blastbeats and a badass lick that successfully transitions through a punchy pre-chorus and soaring, melodic chorus. Even the back-end chugtastic lick kicks some major ass. “Foreshadowing” is a fun little ditty whose foundation is built around an old-school Witchery assault. Throughout, it alternates between slower, melodic sessions, verses that pick up pace as they progress, and an evil fucking chorus with massive gang shouts.
“In Shadows Deep” is another with some Witchery tendencies, but this time in the song’s melodic chorus. Surrounding it is a razor-sharp introduction, chugging verses, and a hefty conclusion. For more diversity, “Symphony of Twisted Souls” tosses in some clean bass and guitars, then it traverses through a couple of headbangable riffs before erupting into the chorus. After completely collapsing on the back half, things get really weird with the lonesome bass and vocal effects that remind me of that weird, mid-career shit Megadeth did because Mustaine realized he sucks at singing. Yet, somehow, through all these strange mood shifts, it pulls itself back together to conclude as a well-rounded song.
Along with some of the songwriting decisions in the opener, that leaves something to be desired, “The Moment to Arise” is a short little piece that is as filler as it gets. From bland riffs to a bland chorus, it’s the most forgettable song on the record. But it’s an easier piece to listen to than “Inside the Burning Twilight,” a boring-as-fuck chorus, and its desire to continue one minute longer than necessary. That said, Embrace the Awakening is a solid outing that continues where the comeback release left off. The first half is stronger than the second, but when the riffs hit, they hit pretty hard. And, when the choruses work, they work well. Otherwise, the album suffers from forgettable moments and filler pieces.

Hellbutcher – Hellbutcher Review
By GardensTale
In the 90’s, Nifelheim was a significant player in the burgeoning Swedish black metal scene, keeping a torch lit for the old school thrash-led sound. The band was founded by two brothers, who employed the stage names Tyrant and Hellbutcher, with the latter taking vocal and frontman duty. Though Nifelheim’s on apparently permanent hiatus, Hellbutcher hasn’t been so idle, recently lending his talents to Friends of Hell and cruising around with Dead Kosmonaut a few years ago. But it’s clear the man is tired of messing around. His new band is eponymous, the logo looks like a logical continuation of Nifelheim’s, and the clown car of highly talented and respected musicians could be called a supergroup if it weren’t so laser-focused on the frontman. Necrophiliac of Mordant on guitars, Eld of Gaahl’s Wyrd, Aeternus and others on bass, long time Unleashed member and Dead Kosmonaut buddy Fredrik Folkare on guitars, and none other than Martin Axenrot1 (Bloodbath, Opeth, Witchery and others) behind the kit. But supergroups have a way of disappointing; does Hellbutcher avoid the curse by not calling itself one?
And how! Hellbutcher and friends have crafted an absolute spitfire of an album, a black-thrash masterclass that puts a brick on the gas pedal of the Devil’s personal hellfire-powered chariot. Once the heroic intro of “The Sword of Wrath” finishes, a cavalcade of sharp riffs bursts forth like an unleashed pack of wolves with rocket boosters strapped to their backs, and they remain hungry and fuelled for the entire runtime of Hellbutcher. Hellbutcher leads the charge, of course, and his raw, raspy scream strikes the perfect balance between evil and demented yet coherent and intelligible. The Axe does what the Axe does best; beating an incredibly diverse array of playstyles out of his kit, with dynamics and precision to spare, whether it’s straight blasting or flitting from rolls to gallops to triplets. The superb bass gets far more room than your average black metal band is willing to offer, and the guitar duo weaves an ongoing tapestry of kickass riffs.
Two things stand out from Hellbutcher. One, the band is clearly having an absolute blast. The sense of fun is infectious, from the theatrical camp of the vocals to the out of control riff-fests. “Perdition” changes its pacing with alarming irregularity and “Hordes of the Horned God” sounds like Maiden possessed by demons, both exemplifying the ‘fuck it, let’s ball’ attitude. And two, this line-up sounds tighter than most bands with a half-dozen albums under their belt. All the musicians here being long-time professionals, a number of whom have played together before, is of course a big boon. But as any sports fan who’s seen a team of all-stars falter on the field knows, synergy can be a fickle bitch.
The electrifying wild energy of the front half doesn’t quite make it into the back, however. It loses a bit of the unpredictability, especially on “Death’s Rider” and “Possessed by the Devil’s Flames.” The latter even re-uses the chorus structure of the superior “Perdition,” furthering the nagging ‘yes, it’s great, but.’ Don’t get me wrong; even the back half sounds vastly superior to most black thrash acts today. “Satan’s Power” is a rollercoaster that draws from across the entire metal spectrum, and despite the predictability, I love the black ‘n roll rhythms of “Death’s Rider.” The production is spot-on as well, sporting a warm yet vicious master and excellent mix.
Hellbutcher’s Hellbutcher has created a gobsmacking debut with Hellbutcher. Melodic, dynamic, snappy, lean and mean, this is what classic black thrash is supposed to sound like. It’s a rambunctious ride of gleeful, campy evil that seems to prioritize fun above all else, yet is every bit as tight as a high-strung tech death album. If you feel disappointed at the score below, know that this was right up to the edge of the big four-oh, held back only by a slight watering down in the second half, and I might still regret it later. Either way, I certainly cannot wait for what Hellbutcher and his pals get up to for Hellbutcher 2: The Butchering.

"WITCH was more of an idea-in-action than an organization. Founded in 1968 by a group of radical women in New York City who wanted to do guerilla theater, covens rose and fell around the country as opportunities to do zap actions presented themselves.
The first action was a hex of Wall Street on Halloween, the annual religious festival of the druidic witches. Spooked, the stock market promptly dropped."https://www.jofreeman.com/photos/witch.html
W.I.T.C.H. reappeared in Portland following Trump's ascension in 2017.

Inverse #acronym naming is hard. I wanted to call my #bluetooth #protocol for the #Potionseller "SPELL" because... #Fantasy, #witchery, #potion themed name... After a long #ChatGPT and brain squeezing session I came up with:
Simple Potionseller Exchange Local Link
I think that checks out :)

“Wouldn’t it be lovely if kindness as pragmatism would make a reappearance – and as itself?” Holzer is smiling, but serious. “As its plain old self, without any application? It should be honoured.”

I learned something new today. This plant is what my husband’s family’s name is derived from. It is now Borrazás, but in Catalán it is Borratja. In English it is the plant “Borage” and my mother planted it all over in the back garden in Bolinas at the farm where I grew up. Somehow it makes me feel more connected to my husband and his family even though we didn’t know each other until I was in my late 30s. #Day03 #365happydays2023 #garden #history #genealogy #plants #herbs #witchery #photgraphy
