    Entertainment: Good (7/10)

This visually stunning film about community beyond civilization goes to great lengths to check off as many items as possible on its genre’s checklist, though the cast saves the film from becoming entirely ordinary.

  2. Gerade gesehen: #SpaziergangnachSyrakus

From the design of the creatures to specific narrative choices and its relative freedom of interpretation, this film clearly stands out from much of what dinosaur cinema has had to offer in recent years.

  5. Just Watched: #MinionsandMonsters

    Cast: Good (7/10)

    Design: Great (8/10)
    Challenge: Generic (5/10)
    Entertainment: Good (5/10)
    Total: More than Ordinary (6,2)

The animation is flawless, and the film is brimming with references and nostalgic nods, but in this third Minions-centered film (the seventh Minions film overall) surprises have become extinct.

Despite a few Robin Hood-esque touches, this film is a rock-solid historical drama that relies noticeably less on the clichés of its genre than it probably could have gotten away with.

  10. A favourite film a day for 365 days: The Train.

Old-fashioned 60s WW2 adventure. Gorgeous B&W photography, spectacular action scenes and ex-acrobat Burt Lancaster doing his own stunts. (Watch him slide down that ladder, run alongside a train, climb onto the footplate, talk to the driver and then jump down.) Fabulous!

  11. A favourite film a day for 365 days: The Duellists.

Ridley Scott's first film looks absolutely gorgeous - that final shot! - and has Harvey Keitel looking and sounding as though he stepped straight out of the 18th century. You really can believe he'd hold a grudge for decades. (And the duels themselves are pretty impressive too.)

  12. A favourite film a day for 365 days LA Confidential.

I love this for the way it takes its time setting all the characters up, and only then introduces the murders that send the plot off in a totally new direction and sets all the moral compasses spinning. Fabulous piece of storytelling.

  13. A favourite film a day for 365 days: Spotlight.

How the Boston Globe uncovered child abuse in the local Catholic archdiocese in 2002. Doesn't have the creeping paranoia of All the President's Men, but it's just as rigorous and engrossing.

  14. A favourite film a day for 365 days: The Paper.

Newspaper stories. Michael Keaton's editor realises the wrong people have been arrested for a murder and won't let the story go. Great characters, terrific dialogue, so many memorable scenes. Must have watched it at least 10 times.

  15. A favourite film a day for 365 days: Petulia.

5 by Richard Lester. Brittle, cold and fragmented, because the people it's about are brittle, cold and fragmented. But absolutely hypnotic all the same. And even though it was made in the 60s, it's very much a 70s movie.

  16. A favourite film a day for 365 days: The Haunting.

Not that awful CGI remake, but the original black-and-white classic, in which you never, ever, see a ghost; you only hear them. Turn the lights off and watch it late at night when you're on your own. It's still scary!

  17. A favourite film a day for 365 days.
Michael Mann Week. I could play this just to look at it. And even though it fools around with the history, it really feels like we're watching 18th century people doing 18th century things. And then there's the final scene on the cliff...
