  1. エロス+虐殺 (Erosu purasu gyakusatsu; Eros + Massacre), dir. Yoshida Yoshishige (aka Yoshida Kijū)

Reading about Seitō, I had to think of this incredibly artistic political film about Itō Noe and Ōsugi Sakae by one of my favorite directors of all time, which I'd hereby like to recommend. Watch the 3.5-hour original cut if you can.

  2. EUREKA (ユリイカ), dir. Aoyama Shinji

Sadly, this is the only good entry in Aoyama's Kitakyūshū Saga (in fact, it's a masterpiece). What a shame the other two (Helpless/Sad Vacation) are just kinda meh, but fortunately, this one works perfectly on its own.

  3. #JamesGray is the last great #novelist of #American #cinema,” said #GionaANazzaro, #Locarno’s artistic director. “His #films form a rich body of work that echoes the #Jewish #diaspora, #filmnoir, and #Russian as well as #NorthAmerican #literature. A #filmmaker with a humanist sensibility and profound #cinephile knowledge, he has experimented with genres such as #sciencefiction and adventure while retaining his own #artistic identity and voice. Celebrating James #Gray at the Locarno #Film Festival means paying tribute to a unique and unmistakable #artist, a filmmaker who speaks the language of #cinema and knows how to pass it on to future generations.”

  5. A Page of Madness (狂った一頁, 1926) – Dir. Teinosuke Kinugasa

Thought lost for decades, this silent film is a triumph of pure visual storytelling. Rejecting intertitles entirely, it uses frantic editing and expressionistic lighting to create a hypnotic, avant-garde experience. A brilliant achievement that feels incredibly modern and ahead of its time.

  6. Two cinephiles, one frustration: every tracker feels dated, costs more than the streaming services it tracks, or stopped listening.

So we built OMNIS, one home for everything you watch. Track movies, series, episodes. Watchlists with a real release calendar. Where-to-watch in your country. Rate, review, discover.

Not a streaming service. Not a piracy tool.

Private Alpha registration is open. 50 to 200 spots.

  7. Love high-quality cinema but tired of the big streaming giants?

I'm really enjoying Japanese Film Festival Online (JFF+): I watched a couple of good #movies and #docs this week. 🇯🇵

Well: the web is probably full of "hidden digital cinematheques" run by cultural institutes and archives that offer #free, legal #streaming.

Here’s a list of gems to feed your cinephile soul this weekend.

  11. Salome (2025) buys into the persistent idea that for a classic text to resonate with modern audiences, it must be given a trendy makeover. If that were true, why didn’t Oscar Wilde set his one-act tragedy about Herod Antipas’ stepdaughter in the late 1800s?

  12. Honestly, I am inspired by Madame Kaja Kallas, former Prime Minister of Estonia, for posting collages every six months of the books she has read on her Instagram. Well, so I made my version too but for the films. I will make this a tradition for me. I am looking forward to your opinions and film recommendations, feel free to tell me!
