  1. #Trump Bulldozed a 1,000-Year-Old #ArcheologicalSite to Make Room for a Second Border Wall

#DHS was in talks with the #WildlifeRefuge that hosts the ancient site to make sure it was protected, a local archeologist said.

"A rare archaeological site in the #SonoranDesert was bulldozed by a Department of Homeland Security contractor involved in building the latest sections of Donald Trump’s #BorderWall, according to multiple sources briefed on the incident.

"The area, in a remote corner of Arizona’s #CabezaPrieta #NationalWildlifeRefuge, is a nearly 280-by-50-foot etching in the desert sand known as an #intaglio.

"Last Friday, without any notice, a contractor working for DHS cut a roughly 60-foot swath across the middle of the intaglio, doing irreparable damage to the 1,000-year-old artifact.

"Cabeza Prieta, one of the largest wilderness areas outside of Alaska, also encompasses lands sacred to the #TohonoOodham Nation, which borders the refuge to the east. The O’odham have fought to prevent border wall construction across their reservation and during Trump’s first term largely prevailed; they also managed to protect the intaglio and a nearby burial site that they consider to be part of their ancestral lands.

" 'I liken it to destroying the Nazca lines — something that culturally we should have been relishing and promoting. Not destroying,' Rick Martynec, an archaeologist, said in a phone interview, referring to the hundreds of figures drawn into the deserts of southern Peru.

"The destruction was confirmed by a federal employee with direct knowledge of the incident, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisal."

  7. 2023: #Environmentalists and #NativeAmerican tribe rebuke #SpaceX ahead of historic rocket launch

Opponents of the project say owner #ElonMusk’s space travel aspirations are not worth the risk of a catastrophic explosion.

    by Cameron Langford / April 19, 2023

"SpaceX launched a rocket with 33 engines, the most powerful ever built, Thursday morning from its South #Texas port and hailed the test flight as a success, though the rocket and an attached space capsule exploded just four minutes after liftoff.

"The company said in a best-case scenario it would be a 90-minute maiden voyage into space and its first-stage #SuperHeavy rocket would separate from its second-stage #Starship spacecraft about three minutes into the flight, and do a controlled descent into the Gulf of Mexico. And Starship would travel around the globe and land off the coast of Hawaii.

"But with SpaceX livestreaming the event the components failed to separate and the vehicle flipped over before exploding.

"Musk, who also owns Twitter, praised his employees’ work on the project in a Twitter post: 'Congrats @SpaceX team on an exciting test launch of Starship! Learned a lot for next test launch in a few months.'

"Environmental and #CivilRights groups condemned SpaceX’s endeavor in statements Wednesday afternoon, saying they feared an explosion would destroy #EndangeredSpecies’ habitat in a nearby wildlife refuge and that rocket shrapnel could injure area residents.

"But there were no immediate reports of environmental damage or injuries Thursday morning after the explosion.

"Since Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, it has become the world’s premier commercial space business, launching its Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets more than 220 times, making history as the first private firm to send astronauts to the International Space Station and delivering cargo to the International Space Station more than 20 times with its Dragon spacecraft.

Aborted launches and explosions are commonplace for the company as it refines its technology, including a 2019 test flight from its '#Spaceport' in #BocaChica — an unincorporated and sparsely populated village in Cameron County outside #BrownsvilleTX — that started a 100-acre brush fire in the Lower #RioGrandeValley #NationalWildlifeRefuge."

  13. Lesser Goldfinch
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NM

We were delighted by a small flock of these bright yellow birds as they foraged among last season's sunflower heads looking for a few last seeds. Impossible to get more than one bird in focus at a time, so isolated this one for this image.

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NM

Originally I was going to post yesterday's photo of the pond with geese today, but realized a pond full of geese is not silent. These two had nothing to say, so they get top billing for #SilentSunday Aren't they cute!

  16. Desert Arboretum
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NM

This lovely garden, pretty even in winter, is adjacent to the visitor center. In the background there are water features to attract birds and quail feeding blocks. There is a nice picnic area with tables under a ramada and a wind break off camera to the right.

  17. Wild Turkey
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NM

Saw a single (young male) turkey walking across the road in the refuge last Monday. My friend stopped the car and I tried to lean out the window to take photos. The bird was so close that my telephoto lens cut much of him off. Nonetheless you can see the fabulous feather colors, patterns, and iridescence.

  18. Javelina (Peccary)
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NM

There was a small sounder of these small pig-like ungulates at two places along the road as we drove through the Bosque. They have been in the region hundreds, if not thousands of years, but this was the first time we'd seen them in the refuge. They didn't seem to mind the cars very much.

The image, especially the face, is a little blurred as I had to quickly grab my landscape camera since they were so close to the car. This camera is set for aperture priority, whereas my camera with the telephoto lens is set for a fast shutter speed. I just rolled down the window and fired away.

  19. Snow Geese at Dawn (with bonus moon)
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NM
[view enlarged to appreciate the hundreds of geese in flight]

Another original I didn't process at the time and recently found. I chose this for #SilentSunday but the joke is on me... I was unsure if these were geese or cranes so dug up the original folder. I happened to take some video (480p from the Nikon point and shoot.) From the sound track I could identify clearly these as geese as they were far from silent in flight!

  20. Perched Cormorants
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NM

These dead branches on which the birds are perched (and notice their webbed feet) extended over a small pond at the time. Due to drought conditions the pond dried up years ago.

  21. Sandhill Crane Standing
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NM

I found a tranche of (mostly) unprocessed jpegs taken back in the heyday of the Bosque. Some, like this one are digiscoped using a small Nikon point-and-shoot. Those days we'd go down several times a season the birding was so good. I'll post more in the coming weeks.
