The main #NatureTrail at Glendale near Camosun College Interurban campus, leading to the estuary viewpoint spot. It crosses a small #footbridge. There is also viewing platform with a spotting scope for park visitors to enjoy - it's beside the parking lot & accessed by a small footpath.

  3. Linden’s Hawk Rise Sanctuary

After my second round of raptor-spotting disappointment at the Chimney Rock Hawk Watch, I felt like I’d been chasing an elusive goal. Determined not to give up, I decided to try again, this time at Hawk Rise Sanctuary in Linden. I had a morning haircut scheduled at my barbershop in Union, just a twenty-minute drive from Linden, so I set off afterwards, reaching the sanctuary just as the morning sun was warming the day. The sky was a calm greyish blue, and the temperature was comfortably […]

  4. On Labour Day, Bhavna and I took a late afternoon walk around Hobler Park. It was between 4:30 and 5:30 PM, and the sky was a soft, muted grey, with the kind of overcast sky that made everything feel quieter. The air was cool, hinting at the approach of autumn, but still held onto the last threads of summer’s warmth.

As we wandered the trails, I noticed the tall American Elm trees swaying gently in the breeze. Golden patches of Common Wrinkle-leaved Goldenrod dotted the path, their yellow blooms glowing against the greenery. We passed a few Field Thistles, their spiky purple flowers standing proudly. Hobler Park felt peaceful, tucked between farms, with its rolling hills and scattered trees. It’s always a nice escape, and on that day, it was just the quiet reset we needed to start the week ahead.

The park felt peaceful in the late afternoon, the perfect way to unwind. I love these moments with Bhavna—simple walks where we talk about everything and nothing, surrounded by nature’s beauty. Hobler Park is especially lovely in this golden hour.

  7. First day since last week without rain Unfortunately, the heavy rains from last week South of me through the Adirondacks have made it down the regional rivers, like the Oswegotchie, to the St. Lawrence The new retaining wall in the Crescent down from the dam is holding up well

  19. Turtle identification is challenging. I had thought, based on photographs I saw online after searching "turtles New Jersey", that this individual was a Painted Turtle. I uploaded the photo to iNaturalist where amateur naturalists, John Keisers, suggested that this was a Northern Red-bellied Cooter.

The Northern Red-bellied Cooter (Deirochelys reticularia) is a freshwater turtle species native to North America. It belongs to the Emydidae family and is characterised by its medium to large size, domed carapace, and distinctive red markings on its plastron. This species typically inhabits slow-moving or still bodies of water such as ponds, lakes, marshes, and rivers with soft bottoms and abundant aquatic vegetation.

Northern Red-bellied Cooters are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of plant matter, aquatic vegetation, insects, crustaceans, and occasionally small fish. They are known to bask on logs or rocks near the water's edge to regulate their body temperature. Breeding season for this species occurs in late spring and early summer, with females laying eggs in sandy or soft soil near the water. Northern Red-bellied Cooters play a role in aquatic ecosystems as both consumers and prey for other predators in their habitat.

  21. 25 May 2021 — Autumn Hill Preserve

I looked at my calendar this morning and felt a pang of anxiety and dread. There is little to no room for thoughtful introspection and critical thinking. It's all go-go-go. I could barely schedule a lunch break, and there's no time in the schedule for an afternoon stretch and mental health break. Our team was assigned more projects to assess this week, and I was given two more, bringing my total to thirteen. During our one on one, the manager commented that I was perhaps at […]
