RE: https://flipboard.social/@newsguyusa/116139026633966900
The office of the Attorney General doesn't have an official "oversight" role for elections but, under the Civil Rights Act of 1960 (designed to make sure black people weren't being discriminated against), that office can demand voter registration records regarding an election within 22 months of it taking place—the period defined by when the person holding those records can destroy them.
See attached image in my reply to this post. The yellow highlight shows the pertinent section.
Note that the part highlighted in green means that the Attorney General or representative *must* go to the place where the records are held to access them; this would preclude sending them via e-mail, for example.

A new law called the SAVE Act is being discussed. Some people worry it will make it hard for married women to register to vote because their names might not match their birth certificates. Supporters say it is to keep elections safe.

Sec. of State #ShennaBellows: #DOJ demand for #Minnesota #voter data shows #ICERaids tied to #elections
Lauren McCauley
Mon, January 26, 2026 at 9:02 AM ESTExcerpt: "Bellows, a Democrat running for governor, has twice rejected requests to provide the DOJ with sensitive voter data, including driver’s license numbers, partial social security numbers and full dates of birth, along with names of officials who handle the list’s maintenance, the number of ineligible voters the state identified due to noncitizenship and voter registration applications from specific time periods, among other information.
"The DOJ has argued the data is necessary to assess states’ compliance with the statewide voter registration list maintenance provisions of the #NationalVoterRegistrationAct.
"Maine is now among the states being sued by the federal government over its failure to comply.
"In a motion to dismiss filed last month, the state argued that the lawsuit should be discharged because the DOJ failed to support a valid legal case as to why it is justified to such information, and that its data requests violate federal privacy law.
"The motion also noted voter registration databases contain information about people’s choice of political party and in which elections they chose to vote, which are activities protected by the #FirstAmendment. Bellows and other secretaries of state have also raised concern about the federal government using voter records for citizenship probes.
"In a statement Sunday, Bellows said, '#Maine will never turn over our voter rolls as a ransom payment to get ICE to end its #unconstitutional assault on our state.
" 'Our founders designed a system where states and local governments, not the federal government, oversee elections to safeguard us from exactly this — a #tyrannical, #PowerHungry president trampling on our #ConstitutionalRights,' she wrote."

#ShennaBellows says Trump's call for federal #elections takeover is blatantly #unconstitutional
#MainePublic | By Steve Mistler
Published February 3, 2026"Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said Tuesday that President Donald Trump's call for a federal takeover of elections is blatantly unconstitutional, but a threat that should be taken seriously given moves his administration has already made.
"Bellows, a Democrat who is also running for governor, says the president's comments on a right-wing podcast about commandeering elections in 15 unnamed states fit a troubling pattern. That includes an effort by the Department of Justice to obtain states' private voter data, which Bellows' office is fighting alongside Oregon in federal court.
"Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon also pushed back after receiving a letter from Attorney General Pam Bondi suggesting the immigration surge there would end if officials complied with the DOJ, a request he described as 'apparent ransom.'
"Bellows said those moves, along with the FBI's recent raid of election offices in #FultonCounty #Georgia, suggest Trump is trying to preempt voter backlash to his policies in coming #elections.
" 'The president fears big losses in the 2026 and 2028 and is trying to set the stage for federal interference in our elections,' she said.
"Under the #Constitution, states govern American elections. But Trump has frequently made unsubstantiated claims that Democrats exploit the decentralized system to rig outcomes."

#DemocracyNow - “No Means No”: #AZ Secretary of State Calls for #Resistance as #Trump Pushes to “#Nationalize” #Voting
February 04, 2026
"As President Trump suggests the federal government should 'nationalize' and take over the elections process from the states, we speak with #Arizona Secretary of State #AdrianFontes. He is the former county recorder for Maricopa County, Arizona, and oversaw elections there in 2020. The #JusticeDepartment has sued Arizona and over 20 other states [includng #Maine] for their full #VoterRegistration lists. 'No means no,' Fontes says in response to the Trump administration’s encroachment on state authority. 'We should not be handing over any of our personal identifying information to the president. Not only should we not be doing it, but it’s against the law for me to fulfill the request from the Department of Justice.' "

This Bill in the Senate Could Disenfranchise Millions of #WomenVoters
Trump has renewed pressure for the Senate to pass the #SAVEAct, which requires #ProofOfCitizenship to vote. For the 69 million women who have changed their last name this would create a barrier to voting.
Kathleen Davis
Feb 3, 2026"Wherever you stand on the political spectrum, the strongest way to make your voice heard is at the voting booth. Yet amid all the turmoil and horror playing out in the streets across the country right now, there’s a quieter, just as insidious plan that could disenfranchise millions of Americans (particularly women) come the November midterm elections.
"The misleadingly named Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (#SAVE) Act, is a republican-sponsored bill that passed in congress in April 2025. It’s sat in the Republican-majority Senate for months but Trump is now putting new pressure to pass it. If it does pass, it could silence millions of voters by creating new barriers to voter registration by requiring in-person proof of citizenship (a birth certificate or passport) that matches the voter’s legal name. Since around 84% of American women who marry take their husband’s last name or hyphenate their surname, this means that an estimated 69 million women may have a legal name that doesn’t match their birth certificate.
"Given that less than half of Americans even have a passport, and about 4 million adult U.S. citizens do not have access to their birth certificate (or other documentary proof of citizenship), that means 21 million Americans could be turned away at the polls. Just as chilling: Given SAVE’s proposed requirement that these documents be presented in person, the bill poses a serious threat to online, mail-in and automatic voter registration, options used by millions of Americans.
"Legal experts also worry that inconsistencies and ambiguities in the bill will lead to uneven enforcement across the country. 'Will marriage certificates be accepted equally across all jurisdictions? We don’t know, because some marriage certificates have different types of information on them, depending on the jurisdiction,' Keesha Middlemass, a political science professor at Howard University told NPR. “'The disenfranchisement — we won't know about it until after the fact.'
"The prospect of such a drastic change to #VoterRegistration coincides with President Trump’s push to suppress voters. Last month, the president repeatedly posted on social media to 'DEMAND VOTER I.D.,' urging action on the bill and reiterating his debunked lies about the outcome of the 2020 election. Elon Musk echoed those calls on X, where “Pass the SAVE Act,” trended last week. Also last week, the #RightWing #TeaPartyPatriots Action group put out a call to its members to pressure the 17 Republican Senators who have not yet cosponsored the SAVE Act. This week Semafor reported that Trump had convinced the few Senate Republican holdouts to vote to pass the #VoterID bill.
"If the act does pass, the stakes are high. 'We've had very close elections in the last three cycles, so if you reduce potential voters by 1 or 2% that could change the outcome of the election,' Middlemass said.
"What can you do now to keep the right to vote free and fair for all? If your legal name doesn’t match your birth certificate or passport, you’ll need to request certified name change documentation like a marriage certificate or divorce decree and check with your state’s security of state that both your voter registration and proof of citizenship are up to date. The U.S. government site, for now, urges those who have changed their name to update their voter registration online or by mail.
"While hope remains that the bill won’t pass through the Senate, if it does, voters will need to get their ducks in a row in advance of election day, since processing these documents can take up to 12 weeks, or longer if states have a backlog of requests. In the meantime, you can sign the League of Women Voters petition to senators not to pass the SAVE Act, or call your senator directly."

Thanks to the Southeast Ventura County YMCA Youth and Government program for the invitation to speak on civic engagement. The kids asked great questions and seemed very interested in getting more involved in their local governments. I encouraged them to get involved in the issues they care about – in other words, to come give us politicians a hard time. :-)
Did you know 16-year-olds in California can pre-register, so they'll be able to vote on their 18th birthday? Even better, they can register online at https://registertovote.ca.gov/
