Trump may think he found a Trojan horse. What he actually found is a trap of his own making. Every action he tries to take to abuse the EAC will be met with resistance and tie him up in litigation as the clock ticks to November. The president’s corruption may be brazen, but it’s also sloppy and short-sighted. And we’re going to keep fighting it in the courts, in the states, and in the open, where schemes like this one go to die.

Trump Fires All Election Assistance Commission Members, Leaving Federal Election Agency Unable to Act

Just months before the 2026 midterm elections, President Donald Trump has removed the remaining members of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), leaving the independent federal agency without the quorum required to carry out many of its responsibilities. (⁠Reuters)

The bipartisan Election Assistance Commission was created by the Help America Vote Act of 2002 to help states improve election administration, certify voting systems, accredit voting equipment testing laboratories, and maintain the national voter registration form.

According to multiple reports, one Republican commissioner resigned while two Democratic commissioners were dismissed by the White House, leaving the agency unable to conduct official business until new commissioners are appointed and confirmed. (⁠Reuters)

The move comes as election officials across the country prepare for the November midterm elections and has sparked debate over the future of federal election oversight. Supporters of the administration argue the president has the authority to appoint new commissioners, while critics say the decision could disrupt election administration and reduce public confidence in the electoral process. The administration has not announced when replacement commissioners will be nominated.
