A learning space can feel like “content” or like somewhere people can actually meet.
In Youth4Peace, we built the EU Democracy Campus as a VR space where young people could explore memory, disagreement, crisis, dialogue, and democratic futures together.
Technology doesn't solve democracy.
But a well-designed space can help people practise it.

Friday in Raleigh – Business, Civic Engagement, and Community Fun
Friday in Raleigh was a full-circle day that captured what makes our city special—entrepreneurship, civic participation, and community connection. From a morning small-business workshop to an impactful local candidates forum and a lively game night downtown, here’s a recap of a well-spent Friday in the City of Oaks.
Starting Strong: How to Start a Business in Wake County (In Person)
The day kicked off with “How to Start a Business in Wake County (In Person)”, hosted by the North Carolina Community College Small Business Center at Halifax Community Center.
This informative seminar walked attendees through the journey from idea to opportunity, covering essential topics every entrepreneur needs to know:
Startup strategy and self-assessment Financing and marketing fundamentals Legal considerations, licensing, zoning, and operations Evaluating the feasibility of a business idea Local and regional resources available to new business owners
It was a practical, empowering session for anyone considering launching—or refining—a business in Wake County.
Civic Engagement in Action: Southeast Raleigh Local Candidates Forum
Later in the day, the Local Candidates Forum for Southeast Raleigh brought together community members eager to hear directly from the voices shaping the March 2026 Primary.
The event saw a strong turnout and meaningful discussion. Attending helped clarify key issues and perspectives, making it easier to form informed decisions about the upcoming primary. Forums like this continue to prove how engaged and thoughtful Southeast Raleigh residents are when it comes to local leadership.
📸 Check out the photos below to see the energy and engagement from the event.
Community & Connection: Game Night at JuicedThe evening wrapped up with Game Night at Juiced, and it did not disappoint. Hosted at Juiced, the event was a full house filled with laughter, learning, and friendly competition.
Discovered a new game Met new friends Enjoyed great vibes and positive energy A wide variety of games for all experience levels
It was one of those nights that reminds you how powerful simple, in-person community experiences can be.

What if civic education wasn’t a one-off “civics week,” but a space where students practice democracy every week?
In the EU Democracy Campus pilots in Portugal and Türkiye, students stepped into a virtual parliament and the results were striking:
📈 +27% confidence to speak in public
🙋 +22% civic self-efficacy
🤝 +19% sense of belongingDemocracy is not just taught — it’s rehearsed.

Inspire public service in your classroom and community with Resisterhood! Today we're highlighting Luis and Soraida Gutierrez, subjects of our new documentary Resisterhood from director Cheryl Jacobs Crim. Luis Gutierrez, a longtime Congressman from Chicago, led the charge to boycott the 2017 Inauguration, and his wife Soraida inspired their participation in the first Women’s March. Luis's story also highlights the Puerto Rican community and speaks broadly to the modern American immigrant experience.
The section on the Gutierrez Family in the Resisterhood Learning Guide explores the different ways elected officials can work inside a system or challenge it from the outside. It includes great extension activities to pursue civic engagement. For grades 10-12, higher ed and adult learning. It's great for campus screenings and community education, too!

Inspire civic engagement in your classroom and community with Resisterhood! Today we're highlighting Dr. Jean Gearon, one of the subjects of our new documentary Resisterhood.
Jean is the great-granddaughter of one of the original Suffragists in the United States. Jean founded a grassroots political group that's involved in local and state politics, as well as the fight to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) — the same battle Jean’s great-grandmother fought more than 100 years ago.
Teach about grassroots organizing and activism, the Equal Rights Amendment, gender equity and civic engagement with Resisterhood! For grades 10-12, higher ed and adult learning. It's great for campus screenings and community education!

In partnership with St Paul’s Carnival/Trinity and David Jubb of Citizens In Power, we are exploring how to co-create a cultural strategy for the city and surrounding region with citizens
In our third blog we reflect on the thoughts and experiences of Bradford 2025 team members, who used the Citizens’ Assembly model as part of Bradford’s UK City of Culture 2025 bid.
