  4. Middletown steel plant contract that would have protected 2500 jobs and created 1200 new ones (at least for construction) has been canceled. Why? It was a ‘green’ program and the incentives looked to be going away.

Now they are looking to AI optimization. That creates jobs right?

  5. Ohio Republican lawmakers want to raise taxes. Specifically, they want to raise taxes on recreational weed by 50% while making it less potent and redirecting all of its tax revenue into their own grubby little hands. #420 #weed #Ohio #marijuana #OHPol #OhioPolitics

  6. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine set to veto controversial ‘medical free speech’ policy

The state or cities could charge people for the “estimated cost” of processing police cam videos — and you would have to pay before the footage is released. Governments could charge up to $75 an hour for work, with a fee cap of $750 per request. ohiocapitaljournal.com/2024/12. #OhioPolitics #MedicalFreeSpeechPolicy

  7. Finishing touches are all that’s left on an Ohio bill that would expand state Attorney General Dave Yost’s power by giving his office the authority to reject citizen ballot initiatives based on their title.

This comes months after Ohio’s top court found he overstepped his authority when denying a voting-rights bill opposing gerrymandered maps, based on its title earlier this year.

  8. I live in Ohio: a state with a Republican legislature, Republican Govenor, and Republican Secretary of State. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that Ohio has sent a prefilled absentee ballot application to every registered voter. Way to go, Ohio! Seriously!

  9. Something I've learned about Republican talking points over the years. When you dig in to claims like "Sherrod Brown voted to give healthcare to illegal immigrants," you find out that they're mad the bill didn't require Americans to bring their birth certificate or passport to the hospital when you're having a heart attack.

I'm sorry but if I'm having a heart attack, I don't want to be digging around for my passport or birth certificate!

  10. Ohio proposes new $20 million natural gas law | NBC4 WCMH-TV

I cannot tell you how infuriating it is to have this story -- about Ohio Republican lawmakers, who are clearly bought and paid for by the fossil fuels industry, doubling down our state's public investment on natural gas when every sensible governing body on the planet is investing instead in renewable energy sources -- come out on freaking Earth Day! #OhioPolitics #ClimateChange

  12. The final result of Ohio Issue 1 continues the trend of urban areas leaning more progressive and rural areas leaning more conservative. Looking at the map I can easily imagine conservative provocateurs and grifters saying "Only a few counties voted No! There must be massive fraud in these big cities!", while knowing they are lying to their audience. MAGA supporters will nod and fume right along with them because they will agree with anything that fits what they want to hear.

A reminder to all: Land doesn't vote — people do.

I'm proud of Ohio for the first time in a long time.

  13. If you know anyone in Ohio, make sure they know that the special election for Issue 1 is today from 6:30am until 7:30pm, and urge them to vote No. If it passes, it will raise the threshold for passing ballot issues from 50% to 60%, allowing a 40% minority to veto ballot issues.

The GOP spent a ton of donor and taxpayer money to set up a special election, just for this one issue, hoping it will pass with low turnout, because it would remove one of the few remaining checks on a heavily gerrymandered statehouse.

  14. Attn Ohio voters: 🚨

Good news out of Ohio, but it’s not over. Vote NO on Issue 1 in the August 8 election.

Issue 1 would require a supermajority, rather than a simple majority, in order to amend the state constitution. Amendments, for example, like protecting reproductive rights.

  15. Props to Progressive Action Fund for making the (NSFW and steamy) best political ad I've ever seen, "Republicans in your bedroom".

After overturning Roe in the Dobbs decision, many Republicans want to restrict reproductive rights even further — including birth control! I'm not exaggerating. In his concurrence with the Dobbs decision, Clearance Thomas wrote:

In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold [which ruled that the Constitution provides the right to contraception], Lawrence [which ruled that the Constitution provides a right to privacy in most private, consensual adult sexual activity, including between those of the same sex], and Obergefell [which ruled that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples by both the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution]. Because any substantive due process decision is “demonstrably erroneous,” we have a duty to “correct the error” established in those precedents.

Ohio Republicans spent a ton of doner and taxpayer money to set up a special election on August 8th, just for one issue, hoping it would pass with low turnout. If it passes, it will raise the threshold for passing ballot issues from 50% to 60%, allowing a 40% minority to veto future ballot issues, such as a ballot issue to amend the Ohio constitution to protect reproductive rights. It would also remove one of the few remaining checks on a heavily gerrymandered statehouse.
