@dalias Say you want the public to benefit from a video codec that's usable by free software in countries where MPEG-LA members hold patents. Would there have been a better way to go about this than how Google released WebM using On2's TrueMotion VP8?

So I have hundreds of videos of ~1 minute recorded from my phone ~10 years ago, and they generally don’t have that great compression, nor they are stored in a modern and advanced video format.
For archiving purposes, I want to take advantage of my workstation’s mighty GPU to process them so that the quality is approximately the same, but the file size would be strongly reduced.
Nevertheless, compressing videos is terribly hard, and way more complex than compressing pictures, so I wouldn’t really know how to do this, what format to use, what codec, what bitrate, what parameters to keep an eye on, etc.
I don’t care if the compression takes a lot of time, I just want smaller but good looking videos.
Any tips? (Links to guides and tutorials are ok too)
Also, unfortunately I am forced to use Windows for this (don’t ask me why 🫠), but I know nothing about Windows because I hate it. Practical software suggestions are very much welcome, too!

I'm making a video codec that uses Color Cell Compression, the predecessor of S3TC. A clip can have 16 colors, and each 4x4-pixel block usea two of them. I aim to play FMV on Mega Drive and Game Boy Advance.
It codes 256x144 pixel 12 fps animation at 25 to 42 kB/s depending on motion. Live action is 62.5 kB/s. Fits Sega CD bitrate, not so much Genesis or GBA cartridge yet. I still see room for byte savings.
Curious? Get the source code https://github.com/pinobatch/color-cell-compression

Ah yes, because nothing screams "cutting-edge" like using Bloom Filters to compress video without losses 🎥🔍—a concept so revolutionary it’s been relegated to a #GitHub README.md. Never mind the minor detail that Bloom Filters are about as useful for video compression as a colander is for holding water 🙄.

The following criteria were used to find suitable tools:
**Criterion**
**Required?**
Specifying the exact target file size
✅ Yes
Simple interface without unnecessary settings
✅ Yes
Support for modern video formats
✅ Yes
Does not require technical knowledge
✅ Yes
Relevance and absence of hidden restrictions
✅ Yes
Ability to save templates
🔸 Preferable🎯** Final candidates**
After testing various utilities, the list of finalists included: **three programs**, which actually allow you to compress video to a given size **without complicated settings**.

The quest for the perfect video compression tool was far from simple. In our search, we prioritized **efficiency, simplicity, and speed**, hoping to balance performance with the ease of use for non-experts. After evaluating several tools, we found that **Shutter Encoder** proved to be the most effective for our needs. However, as with all tools, it does come with its own set of challenges. While it delivers impressive results with hardware acceleration, it lacks pre-set templates for exact file sizes, which may be a dealbreaker for some users.
**Upcoming Second Article: Test Results and Practical Insights**
In the upcoming second article, we will dive deeper into the results of our **Shutter Encoder** tests, comparing the output quality and compression efficiency across various formats such as **H.265**. We'll analyze the practicality of the tool, focusing on real-world use cases, performance metrics, and system requirements. Stay tuned as we explore further insights and provide a final recommendation based on practical testing and actual results.🎮 How to easily transcode a video to the desired size | An honest review of simple programs for Windows 10

I just read about tasty #image #compression via
https://evilmartians.com/chronicles/images-done-right-web-graphics-good-to-the-last-byte-optimization-techniques#svg-scales-very-goodtake-aways (and there are many): #GIFS are BAD. #WebP are good. #ImageMagick is good. Oh yeah, and those weird conversions of images to video files on Reddit -- how that works, because #VideoCompression is good!

Interesting 🤔
I think I'll leave the same poll running a full again, to see how that goes 👀
I'm using the H265+AAC variant since quite some time.
As AV1 promises to be yet a bit better and is also royalty free, I thought about switching 🤔First test looks promising in comparison. Anyone open to explain their reason for or against one of the options? 👀

Hmmmmm, private video library default codec combo 🤔👀

#FediTips #MastoTips #Video #VideoCompression
🎬 I know a lot of people struggle with posting videos on Mastodon as the file limits can be very strict, so here's my guide:
🗑️ 1. There's a million tutorials about video compression, but unless you're interested in the technical details, you can ignore them.
📥 2. Go and download Handbrake, a free open source video converter that works on Linux, Win and Mac: https://handbrake.fr/
📂 3. Open it and drop your video file in.
🎛️ 4. Ignore all the complicated settings, instead find the preset button/dropdown.
🎞️ 5. Select a preset: I recommend 'very fast 720p' to make your vid even smaller. It'll still look good, I promise!
📽️ 6. Set a file name and click "Start". Wait for the bar to finish and then your new video is ready to be posted!
🗜️ About 1min of video should be around 6mb this way, which is smaller than most animated gifs!
