Otra cosa que las patentes entorpecen.

A día de hoy se sigue utilizando #DTS y #DolbyDigital en cualquiera de sus variantes. Todos un atraso con respecto a los más modernos #FLAC y #Opus, sin regalías por #patentes.

Las patentes, cuando se abusa de ellas, frenan el desarrollo y crean incentivos perversos para obligar a utilizar unas tecnologías más que superadas pero muy lucrativas para los poseedores de las patentes.

#VVC (el equivalente del #MPEG y #VCEG -juntos forman el #JVT- a #AV2) se finalizó en 2020 y a día de hoy sigue sin implementaciones en GPUs por las condiciones para licenciar sus patentes.

I wonder what the hardware encode timeline is going to be this time, compared to #AV1.

i was also wondering if when #AV2 comes out, it would bring with it new version of AVIF. my guess is *probably not*. VP9 didn't bring a new version of WebP, or at least not a finished one.

i'm guessing with (typically) one less dimension to compress video codec advances just don't bring the same rate of improvement to still images. maybe AV3 will give us AVIF2.
