Reading about the license cost increase of h264 (video codec) shows that open and royalty-free standards and codecs are important to be independent and inclusive.
In the very few cases, two or something, where I converted videos I also used h264, despite preferring something open like the modern AV1, just because I know basically all devices, like my laptop, support hardware-decoding of h264, while software-decoding of AV1 (no clue if my laptop can hardware-decode VP8/9) needs more power.
I should change that in the future, out of principle, as much as I value better old-device support.
That said: AV1 also has some companies claiming patents, so far without success. Bite patent trolls and software patents!

Software patents should have never been allowed to become a legit thing.
Ars Technica: AV1's open, royalty-free promise in question as Dolby sues Snapchat over codec

Broadcom are just useless patent trolls at this point.
If you can't get a Renault Megane or Clio in Germany at the moment you can thank them for it somehow, because of their "Method and system for an extended range ethernet line code" software patent (EP1903733).
Software parents should be banned tbh :drgn_drowsy:

@dalias Say you want the public to benefit from a video codec that's usable by free software in countries where MPEG-LA members hold patents. Would there have been a better way to go about this than how Google released WebM using On2's TrueMotion VP8?

I too am shocked and offended.
"In my opinion, none of the three patents I've discussed here should have been allowed. It's shocking and offensive that they were," Sigmon said. "The USPTO dropped the ball big time, and it's going to externalize a lot of uncertainty (and, potentially, litigation cost) onto developers and companies that do not deserve it."

Petition to have it so Blackmagic Design has Linux users pay separately for AAC audio codec support as an add-on to Resolve Studio so at least there's a way for Linux users to have all the codecs easily if they want them and make it so the cost doesn't have to increase for anyone else. This doesn't excuse patents existing, in this case patents for math, I just want easy AAC usage.

📝 Breaking: Senate considers law to patent "clicking things on screens." Next up: patenting breathing while coding!
PERA bill could let patent trolls claim basic software functions. Even ordering a pizza online could require lawyer consultation.
Contact your Senator before Thursday! #SoftwarePatents #TechPolicy

CW: USPol, Patent Trolls, Bad Legislation
Oh, FFS...
Patent trolls are bad enough now, but they used to be worse, before court cases made "something that already exists...but on a computer!" harder to patent.
The sponsors of a pair of bills that will make things easier for patent trolls by allowing vague patents again and making it harder to challenge them...are trying to push it forward this week
EFF has more information and a tool to contact your representative and senators.

Software patents are evil, I can imagine to be patented some specific algorithms (such mp3 was) but generic patents such this one, that in theory patented any data analytical engine shall never existed. #softwarepatents #dataanalytics I am really scared to develop any idea. https://patents.google.com/patent/US9275031B2/en

Serious question.
What is a no-cost resource for #counsel #advisory about how to secure one's #intellectualproperty rights in the context of forthcoming release.
Oh. Is that what they mean by software patents? #softwarepatents
I don't know that software patent is relevant.
@Vivaldi
I know nothing of sofware dv, law, copyright, etc. Never cared.I'm a former music industry dude however, so i might know a little about #copyright already.

For some reason I can't hear anything if I convert an audio track in place with #ffmpeg to be PCM audio in an MP4 file and put that on Resolve's first audio track, but it works if I move it to track 2. Still can't see the waveforms, though. Sure I could extract the audio, but then it's slightly longer than the video for some reason. This is necessary on #Linux because it doesn't support AAC audio (I hate #SoftwarePatents ).

Me: "Obi Wan never told you why #GNOMEShell still uses the VP8 #codec to record screencasts, instead of newer codecs…"
Them: "He told me enough! He told me #GNOME hates its users!"
Me: "No. It's mostly a temporary performance tradeoff around a #Linux middleware & #softwarepatents problem."
Them: "No… No… It's not true… That's impossible!"
Me: "Search the commits log. You KNOW it to be true."
Them: "DO NOT WANT"

Software patents and litigation create costly hurdles for innovation. Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) promotes open collaboration, allowing developers to build on each other's work. By bypassing restrictive patents, FOSS drives technological progress and keeps innovation accessible to everyone.
