In a groundbreaking display of ⚠️absolute absurdity⚠️, someone decided to squeeze 60fps video onto a CGA, the computing equivalent of fitting a Ferrari engine into a tricycle. 🤡 Witness the #GlyphBlaster, a project that proves once and for all that just because you can doesn't mean you should. 🎉

The quest for the perfect video compression tool was far from simple. In our search, we prioritized **efficiency, simplicity, and speed**, hoping to balance performance with the ease of use for non-experts. After evaluating several tools, we found that **Shutter Encoder** proved to be the most effective for our needs. However, as with all tools, it does come with its own set of challenges. While it delivers impressive results with hardware acceleration, it lacks pre-set templates for exact file sizes, which may be a dealbreaker for some users.

  24. Don't know if I've posted this before or not, but there are new builds of #Handbrake (video encoder) which have AV1 SVT-PSY instead of just plain SVT as an encoding option. 25. We will see h.266 (VVC) adoption because AV1 isn't a full replacement for it

AV1 is designed for streaming media. At high bitrates it will start to perform worse. I doubt it can outperform h.264 at Blu-ray bitrates.

Cameras and phones will record to it that means you're going to want a hardware h.266 decoder because software decoding is not looking too hot and I don't know how much it can actually be improved.

Maybe AV2 will finally be a full replacement

  26. CW: video rendering question

Does anyone know the best way to render to a #YouTube-compatible file from audio plus a single still image?

I see this done all the time, but my two attempts so far have been larger than the original FLAC audio file (and I don't need lossless or even super-great quality; it's a cassette recording of a radio broadcast).

I'm using #kdenlive, and I'm now on my 3rd attempt (custom settings, with the video rate set to zero k), but I can see the encoding artifacts changing as I play it back -- so it's still doing a video instead of a still photo.

(I think this one may end up being reasonably small, so may be usable -- but it's also taking forever, and I have to think it's the video encoding which is taking most of the CPU cycles.)

Netflix is a founding member of the alliance for open media, a non-profit which paves the way for open-source, royalty-free codecs like AV1.

  29. It is irrelevant how performant proprietary video codecs are.
There is zero purpose dedicating any time or energy supporting a system where every client and server has to pay a license to use it.

AV1, and upcoming open-source royalty-free competitors are the only future for video encoding.

A codec that no one can use is useless.

I now have a set of MP4s of episodes from this DVD, and I'd like to add the intro, which is a separate MP4 file with identical encoding, to the beginning of each of them. I am using MacOS and I have ffmpeg installed, in case that's the best solution. I originally converted them from MKV to MP4 using Handbrake.
