We recently watched Reunion (TVNZ+), a 5-part TV mini-series about a deaf man who is released from prison for murdering another deaf man – there is a highly nuanced story there that isn't fully revealed until the last episode. He struggles to rebuild his relationship with his daughter as he seeks to settle some old scores. Several of the actors, including the main character, played by Matthew Gurney, are actually deaf, and much of the series is in sign language. The switching between the spoken word and signed language is both seamless and quite remarkable. It is a terrific portrayal of how isolating deafness can be. (Trigger warning: themes of child abuse.)
Definitely 5 out of 5 stars.

#Children have borne the brunt of the #infections, making up >70% of confirmed cases. >80 children & adolescents have been hospitalized this year for complications like #pneumonia, which leaves patients gasping for air, & #brain swelling, which can cause lasting damage, including #blindness, #deafness & intellectual #disabilities. (There are NO treatments for #measles, though researchers are trying to develop them.)

❤️ Mumu passed away at the Bath Institution for the Blind and Deaf.
🇸🇱 Born in Sierra Leone, Mumu’s real name is unknown. As a young child, she was kidnapped by slavers and put on board a slave ship.
⚓️ The ship was then rescued by the West Africa Squadron.
🇬🇧 When she was about 11, she was invited to study at the Bath Institution, where she thrived. For more, see my books on Somerset.

One of our sons is losing his hearing, so now I can add learning British Sign Language to my polyglot life. 😂
Some of the signs are really sensible.
Horse for example is basically “G G” created by holding the letter G and moving the fists in a vertical circle twice (Young English children call a horse a GeeGee, prounced as hard G, or J’s).
Rabbit is the bunny ears on topof your head.
Fish is a swimming motion sideways with one flat hand.Taking it slowly, but it’s fun so far. 😇
