Today I convinced a room of people to illegally copy their DVDs and Blu-Rays
I'm pretty passionate about data preservation. Now, I wanna be clear. I'm NOT a pirate. I never download anything from illegal torrent sites. I like to make sure I have backups of my DVDs and Blu-Rays, mostly because I've been affected by disc rot before. It's becoming increasingly relevant though. Been in touch with some "Archivist" working on a comprehensive archive of all the Cybersix material...
They plan to release like a BitTorrent or something to make it easy to share and prevent "Link Rot"...

According to Anna's Archive Spotify's total music library contains 256 million tracks 99.9% of which they have archived the metadata of, the smaller music archive was created in order of Spotify's "popularity" metric

Here's a New York Times article which talks about the process that one company goes through to preserve valuable recordings. It seems that tapes from before 1970 have fewer problems, a lot of tapes from the 70s and 80s are deteriorating fairly quickly. (Gift link)

Hey Fedi Friends, anyone have experience fighting with YouTube over copyright bullshit? I’m not entirely convinced this isn’t a troll and it’s taken down my whole channel, including some other endangered shows and my podcasts.
My main concerns being that I’d think Hasbro would have in-house lawyers, not some solo rando, and the original copyright ping when I uploaded them was from Hasbro Studios, not Hasbro, Inc.

My "masters" for ExoSquad (someone's web rip from Peacock that I torrented) seem to be getting along better with the "anime" upscaling models than my PAL DVD rips of Visionaries and Inhumanoids. I really should look into making a training model specifically for the style of 80s action cartoons, and maybe a robot-specific one trained on things with existing 1080p+ masters like TFTM and GaoGaiGar.

The thing with media preservation is, while there are times that things are lost forever, many things thought lost can turn up in the possession of someone, somewhere, as long as there are more than one of the item, it was publicly available to keep at some point, and its distribution was wide enough to not make all copies easily destroyable by adversaries. There's plenty of people saving them, but there isn't a central database of metadata or standards to follow like we have with movies (TMDB/IMDB) and TV (TVDB)
We need something similar for commercial metadata and a standard naming format to help with preservation

I'm currently going through old footage that is already preserved. But I am finding that the contents aren't well documented. There are clips in the video that can't be found by searching for it. Do I cut and publish those clips or something different?
