Merkittävä muutos läppäreihin lähestyy: parin viikon päästä kannettavissa tietokoneissa on pakko olla tarjolla latausmahdollisuus USB-C:n kautta
Laki sallii myös valmistajan oman latausliittimen käytön USB-C:n rinnalla, mutta USB-C -latausta on pakko tukea 28.4. alkaen julkaistavissa uusissa läppäreissä.

If you buy things on #AliExpress, you are going to get scammed every so often. Their buyer protection program is pretty decent, although it can be a bit of a pain to go through the process.
You can increase your chances of getting scammed by buying things where the #deals are too good to be true. When the deals are ludicrously, impossibly good, your chances increase to 100%.
This can be fun. I have bought a few things over the years that were obviously #scams. Once, I spent a few hundred dollars for two tablets that, if they had been real, were selling for about one tenth of what they should have. Seeing how they faked them being new products, when they were actually recycled ancient low-end tablets, was fascinating.
But I generally won't do that. Instead, I buy cheap stuff, trading a few dollars for the fun of seeing what the seller/manufacturer have done. I don't even try to get my money back on these.
So I recently bought a #USB #charger that I've been seeing for months. It's described as a 240W total output, gallium-nitride, USB-PD and QC-3.0 compatible, five-port charger. The genuine article from a reputable manufacturer, if it exists, must cost over CDN $100. This one was ... five bucks.
So I knew it was going to be interesting. It arrived today. It weighed more than expected, but all at one end. The case appears to be ultrasonically welded, so getting it open is destructive.

Saw an interesting USB-PD decoy device online. This one negotiates for 5A at 12V, so 60W total. Its form factor is just a short cable, with a USB-C plug on one end, and ... a 3.5mm socket on the other.
I see no possible way this could go wrong.

I was testing a mini module (CKCS U1E 65w) for USB charging from a DC source to many USB C protocols.
I've noticed with "vooc" charge at 9v 3.3A the inductor's module is at 90°c
A bit high moreover if it has an enclosure as this one:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7172904With this refurbished adhesive heat sink it falls at 60°c

Got a Surface Laptop Studio 2? Or just need a 100W+ USB-Power Delivery charger?
My new favorite charger is the "Anker Prime Charger, 160W 3-Port (140W on a single port). Perfect for a power-hungry laptop+smartphone.

I drooled all over this when it came around on #USBPD - It's stunning he could hang THAT MUCH off a PSU when most commercial wall units have a hard time coping with two 100w requests without derating/melting. Active/aggressive cooling ftw, I guess?

They are selling USB audio amps that use a USB-C shaped 5V port for power and a dedicated USB-B for audio. You really can't make this up!

@s0 thanks for nerdsniping me into buying a pair of the GaN PSUs!
The EU variant is also too thick for the Type C "Europlug" sockets, but works well in Type F!
What surprised me is that they announce PD dual-role-power with a 20V/1.5A consumer, so they might be misunderstood as a powerbank by too smart PD devices?!
And it will (very slowly, ~3.5h) charge my idle ThinkPad L15, so might be a usable travel adapter after all!

I've had my eye on these #USB power meters for a while. They come in lots of variations, with different ports and screens, but my big concern is how they handle USB power negotiation with various #fastCharging protocols. Does anyone have any recommendations for which devices handle #USBPD, #SuperVooc, and #QuickCharge?

CW: tech, computer, hardware
After getting some news today for Ryzen 7 8700G being at an all-time low price point, I thought about researching a little bit on ITX mainboards with AM5 socket. And then, I had the idea of looking for mainboards with USB power delivery _input_. It seems that there are none?! For almost a year now, I power my Minisforum UM780 XTX with the USB-C cable coming from my Dell WD19s docking station. While it seems pretty normal nowadays for laptop mainboard designs to acquire power via USB-C it still seems unthinkable to power a low power desktop setup via USB-C even with the extended power ranges up to 240 watts.

The UGREEN Nexode 500W charger can deliver up to 240W of power over a single USB-C port, but it's also a multi-port charger with four more 100W USB-C ports and a USB-A port. All told, it offers up to 500W of power to multiple devices. Coming in March. https://buff.ly/40mLzf1 #UGREEN #UGREENNexode500W #USBPD

Tästä päivästä eteenpäin USB-C on pakollinen latausliitin useissa eri laitteissa - ei vain kännyköissä.
USB-C -latausliitin on pakko löytyä mm. tableteista, kannettavista kaiuttimista, nappikuulokkeista, jne.
Toinen merkittävä muutos koskee kännyköiden pikalatausta - nyt kaikkien laitteiden on pakko tukea standardia USB PD -pikalatausta, eli jatkossa vaikkapa Applen kännyköitä voi pikaladata OnePlussan laturilla ja toisinpäin.

But not everything is pure pleasure in the world of USB PD. The USB PD charger I'm using is not a big deal, and has a standby power consumption of 0.125W when it's working at 5V (unpresentable for 2024 🙈), but when it's put to work at 20V the standby consumption goes to 1W! 😱. A 5W lamp that consumes 1W when turned off?!?! 💩
After a couple of days pondering this depressing result, I thought of trying something: Make the charger go back to 5V when the lamp is off!
-
The solution? Use the new USB PD chargers, which can deliver different voltages if we ask them nicely 😁. I'm using a board with the HUSB238 to ask the charger to give me 20V, which is enough to turn on the 17V LED and makes everything work more efficient and cooler because the current in the cable is only 0.25A, converting from 220V to 20V is more efficient, and the step-down to regulate the LED current is more efficient than the step-up of the previous version.
-
Congrats, Me! I've gone over 3a with an actually compliant USB power supply!
https://lectronz.com/products/ppstrigger-board if YOU want to do USB-C power supply replacement using adjustable voltage 3-20v/1-5A (...or even more? I think the sniffer claims it was negotiating 12v/6a)

Swapped my Dreamcast's PSU. Planning on doing a GDEMU install at some point, and while the stock PSU is perfectly good, it being a PAL unit means it doesn't like the 12V rail not being used. The resistor trick in the stock PSU seems a bit unsafe, so decided to replace it with the Robot_Retro unit.
I'm using a uGreen Nexode mini 30W as the AC-DC.

#amstrad #pcw 9256 resurrected!
Having got it working then shorted the psu on the floppy housing (🤬), converted to USB-C PD.Lots of capacitors replaced and the image is almost stable (a few ~100v caps still need doing as I don't have anything above 50v in stock).
Pleased :)
Now just need to make a #cp/m boot disk!

Anybody got some recommendations for a low-pain USB PD stack / MCU?
It has to support PD3.1, especially EPR.I have skimmed the offerings from Cypress (Infineon), STM and WCH, but none have yet convinced me to any significant degree...
Are there some stacks/libraries that are commonly used on #STM32 that make it easier to get started?
Maybe some example code for an EPR source? -
