  1. The Guardian | Meta profited from illegal scam ads, California county lawsuit alleges by Reuters

California’s Santa Clara County has filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms, alleging the company profited from illegal scam ads on Facebook and Instagram in violation of the state’s false‑advertising and unfair‑business‑practice laws. The complaint, based on leaked internal documents, claims Meta earned up to $7 billion annually from “high‑risk” scam ads and that it largely tolerated such fraudulent advertising rather than broadly cracking down on it, even setting “guardrails” that limited anti‑scam measures when they threatened revenue. The county seeks restitution, civil damages, and an injunction to stop Meta’s alleged misconduct, accusing the firm of enabling middlemen to sell protected ad accounts, targeting users who previously clicked scam offers, and using generative AI to facilitate deceptive ads. Meta says it will defend itself, arguing the lawsuit misrepresents its anti‑scam efforts.

Ngl, at this point I probably should also make one of these and all I write into it is:

    1. Get a stock picture that looks like money.
    2. Make a short "How to make money guide" and post it online.

  12. The #fraud and #scams that Presidents can get away with.

In 2025, Trump offered a 'golden' T1 mobile phone. 'Made in America'.

590.000 (!!) people paid a deposit to buy the phone.

Now, a year later, no phone has been delivered, but the conditions have been changed: the deposit is no longer a deposit, but has become a NON-REFUNDABLE 'conditional opportunity'.

59 million (!) US$ income, no phones delivered, and the buyers won't be able to get their money back.

  18. Has anyone else here noticed a huge surge lately in spam phone calls involving home insulation scams?
Most of the numbers (apparently) have Scottish area codes but in the past couple of days I started getting the same nonsensical obviously recorded messages from (apparently) mobile numbers.
I assume that all these numbers are spoofed and that the calls actually originate outside the UK(?)

  24. Undocumented feature in Facebook -- it leads the pack as the origination point for many online scams.

FTC reports social media scams cost US peeps $2.1B in 2025 -- an 8x increase since 2020. WhatsApp and Instagram were a "distant" second and third to Facebook as the starting point and scams can be broadly grouped into investments, shopping, or romance. tomsguide.com/computing/online #SocialMedia #Scams #OnlineScams #Facebook #WhatsApp #Instagram #Internet #FTC #Shopping #OnlineShopping #Investments

  25. We've all seen those obvious deepfakes online picturing Trump or Musk getting arrested by the FBI. The latest AI tools are now so advanced that looking for the usual signs like extra digits on hands is no longer helpful when trying to spot them. The Atlantic's Lila Shroff experiments with photorealistic images of bank alerts, passports and tax forms and explains how deepfakes are coming for our bank accounts.
