Stop coercion in mental health! #WithdrawOviedo
The draft Additional Protocol to the #OviedoConvention violates human rights by allowing for the continued use of involuntary treatment and placement in psychiatry, which increases coercion, and is prohibited under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (#CRPD #UNCRPD).

The proposed #UKGov #PIP Law actually appears to be unlawful!
‘The legal opinion says: “there can be no doubt that the reforms are regressive in #HumanRights terms. Therefore, in accordance with the principle of non-retrogression, they are presumed to be prohibited under #UNCRPD, #ICESCR and #UNCRC. Accordingly, the burden falls on the Government to show that despite the regressive nature of the reforms, they are complying with their obligations under the Treaties.”’

The #UnitedNations is not ignoring the treatment of #Disabled folk in UK. On 7.7.25 they sent a letter to #UKGov reminding the government of previous and ongoing serious failings to ensure #DisabilityRights and to protect people with #disabilities.
The link is to a downloadable document replete with quotations from previous communications with UKGov highlighting their heinous breaches of #UNCRPD.

The attacks on Disabled people and social security such as Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is further evidence of what the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Disabled People reported last week, which "said the UK government had 'failed to take all appropriate measures to address grave and systematic violations' of disabled people’s human rights and had 'failed to eliminate the root causes of inequality and discrimination' since November 2016. (Obviously to really tackle the root causes, things like capitalism need to go and no electoral system is going to help here!)
Central to independent living is the recognition that Disabled people face socio-economic and ideologically (e.g medical model) shaped barriers, linking into the social model of disability. PIP - which already has such a harmful, damaging application and assessment process central to it - is intended to help with related extra costs, whether in work or not...

I honestly thought the UN CRPD – United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities* – was a dead certainty for incorporation into UK law
After all, the UK ratified the treaty in July 2009, under the last (New) Labour government, so it’s been a long time coming

#UKgov has treated #disabled folk badly since 2010. The #MinisterForDisabled changes often. #Pursglove failed to point out that the last review was quashed by the Courts & that UK is only country formally investigated by #UN for breaches of #UNCRPD and found to be failing across the board.
