Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:1-2)
The opening verses of Romans 12 presents to us a powerful call to action for believers in Christ. Here, the Apostle Paul urges us to completely offer ourselves – our entire beings – as a “living sacrifice” to God. To St. Paul, this wasn’t speaking about a one-time offering, but a continuous act of surrender on our behalf, with a sincere dedication of our whole lives to serving Him.
But he doesn’t stop there. Paul goes on to warn us against conforming to the patterns of this world. The world as we know it is full of fleeting pleasures and self-gratification, which continuously offers humanity a deceptive mirage to where true happiness comes from. We therefore tend to chase materialistic experiences, believing they will bring us a sense of lasting fulfillment, but ultimately, these situational satisfactions only leave us looking for happiness in the wrong things, places and people.
Our generation bombards us with the notion that happiness lies in acquiring things, achieving success, or having exhilarating ‘dare-devil’ experiences. We devote so many hours to reading our favorite books, delve deep into subjects that fascinate us, or schedule social gatherings with loved ones. However, all of these things last for a moment. While these can be helpful and enriching to the human experience, they often leave us searching for happiness in something more profound that transforms us from the inside out.
The truth is, real spiritual growth and existential gratification don’t come from external circumstances and experiences. They can only give us joy in the time of which they occur. True happiness in life comes from a transformed mind that has been renewed by their developing relationship with God. As St.Paul says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
But how do we achieve this transformation? Here are a few key steps:
1. Renewing Your Mind Through Scripture:
The Bible is God’s word, a living and active document that has the power to transform our hearts and minds (Hebrews 4:12). When you immerse yourself in the word of God, it allows Him to speak directly to you, reveal His Divine character to you, guide you in His will, and lead you in His purpose for your life. It is essential to the Christian to create a habit of reading the Bible daily. That’s why meditating on scriptural passages, and applying the Word of God to your life are all crucial for the process of spiritual renewal.
2. Prayer is A Constant Conversation:
As you already know (hopefully) that prayer isn’t just about asking God for things. It’s a two-way conversation where you can express all of your joys, sorrows, doubts, and desires to Him without reservation. Unlike earthly conversations that can be filled with judgment or condescension, God listens to us with perfect love and understanding. He wants to hear from you, not because He needs information, but because He desires a deep and intimate relationship with you.
Think about it this way: how would you feel if your child only spoke to you when they needed something? God, our loving Father, longs for a genuine connection and prayer is the bridge that allows us to connect with Him on a heart level.
3.Selflessly Serving Others:
Focusing on yourself isn’t the path to true happiness. Stepping outside your comfort zone and serving others shifts your focus from self-gratification to something bigger. Volunteering your time, showing kindness to those in need, and using your talents to bless others allows you to experience the joy of giving and living according to God’s will.
By stepping outside your comfort zone and serving others, you shift your focus from self-gratification to something bigger – reflecting the very heart of God. Just as Jesus came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45), we too are called to follow in the footsteps of Christ.
4. A Constant Journey:
Transformation is a continuous developmental journey, not a single destination that we have to reach. There will be times when you stumble, especially when the temptations of the world seems too strong. Remember, God’s grace is sufficient. When you fall, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and recommit yourself to living a life surrendered to Him.
Living as a living sacrifice isn’t a burden. It’s an opportunity to experience the incredible joy that comes from aligning your life with God’s will. By renewing your mind, prioritizing prayer daily, serving others, and embracing the journey of life with faith in Christ, you can find true transformation and fulfillment that can only be found in God that surpasses any fleeting experience that the world might have to offer.

May You grant me the discipline to immerse myself in your Word and allow it to transform my mind. Help me cultivate a life of prayer where I can share every aspect of my life with you.
