been thinking about the low societal rumblings from ideas like: #smallweb / #slowtech / #offline / #solarpunk / #digitalminimalism / etc and i would like to declare that i officially request we bring back cybercafes.
i dont just mean some hipster nod to them, but rather specifically that they serve as *the only* place you can surf the web and check your mail. no other access to the internet, period.

Monitor z 1984 roku i symulator kuriera. Czego używają dziennikarze technologiczni, gdy nikt nie patrzy?
Zamiast generować kolejne zestawienie „Top 10 gadżetów, które musisz mieć”, zajrzyjmy za kulisy jednej z najciekawszych redakcji technologicznych na świecie. Ekipa 404 Media – niezależni dziennikarze, którzy na co dzień tropią patologie w Dolinie Krzemowej – podzieliła się tym, co ich naprawdę kręci. Wnioski? W 2026 roku uciekamy w retro, naprawiamy stare graty i szukamy spokoju.
Jeśli nie znacie 404 Media, to warto nadrobić zaległości. To byli redaktorzy Vice/Motherboard, którzy mieli dość korporacyjnych układów i SEO-szamba, więc założyli własny, niezależny serwis. Kiedy oni coś polecają, to nie dlatego, że dostali to w barterze albo liczą na prowizję z linku na Amazonie. Polecają, bo tego używają. To podejście jest bliskie także nam. Do tematu wrócimy wkrótce z własnymi typami – dajcie nam chwilę, by zebrać głosy całej redakcji.
A tymczasem wracając do 404 Media – w ich noworocznym newsletterze znalazło się kilka perełek, które idealnie rezonują z tym, o czym często piszemy w iMagazine.
Jason Koebler: prawo do naprawy i… estetyka z 1984 roku
Jason, znany z walki o „Right to Repair” i krytyki e-odpadów, w tym roku złamał swoje zasady i kupił sporo sprzętu. Ale nie były to nowe iPhone’y. Jego hit roku? Monochromatyczny, zielony monitor Apple II z 1984 roku. Kupił go na eBayu za 125 dolarów. Po co? Wyłącznie dla estetyki w tle podcastu. Do tego dokupił tani odtwarzacz wideo na karty SD i puszcza na nim zapętlone wideo. To czysty tech-nostalgia trip.
Do tego dochodzi analogowy aparat Canon Prima 5 (znaleziony na pchlim targu za 15 dolarów) oraz… drukarka Riso z 1995 roku, którą Jason naprawia własnoręcznie od trzech miesięcy. To dowód na to, że technologia nie musi być najnowsza, żeby dawać radość. Czasem większą satysfakcję daje wskrzeszenie 30-letniego sprzętu niż wyjęcie z pudełka nowej zabawki.
Emanuel Maiberg: logistyka zamiast strzelania
Emanuel przyznał się do czegoś, co zrozumie wielu z nas: kupił PlayStation 5 tylko dla jednej gry. I nie jest to GTA VI. Chodzi o Death Stranding 2. To gra o logistyce, optymalizacji tras i budowaniu infrastruktury. Emanuel spędził w niej 70 godzin, robiąc „platynę”, bo – jak sam pisze – czerpał przyjemność z samego przebywania w tym świecie i wykonywania powtarzalnych zadań.
Co ciekawe, wspomina też o Arc Raiders (o którym pisaliśmy w najnowszym wydaniu iMagazine!). Grał w nią z Matthew Gaultem i uznał za najlepszy extraction shooter na rynku, ale… odbił się od ściany. Powód? „Ludzie są teraz tak dobrzy w gry, że czuję, że nie nadążam”. To smutna diagnoza współczesnego gamingu sieciowego – jeśli nie trenujesz jak e-sportowiec, przestajesz się bawić.
Red Dead Redemption na iOS i iPadOS – mobilna legenda, która nie miała prawa działać tak dobrze
Joseph Cox: skonfiguruj wreszcie ten tryb Skupienia
Joseph rzucił poradą, która jest tak prosta, a tak rzadko stosowana. Chodzi o iOS Focus Modes (Tryby Skupienia). Jego rada? Poświęć te 5 minut w ustawieniach iPhone’a. Skonfiguruj telefon tak, żeby przepuszczał powiadomienia z Signala (od przyjaciół), ale bezlitośnie blokował Slacka i Gmaila (od pracy). To mała zmiana, która przywraca kontrolę nad życiem.
Samantha Cole: głosówki to nowa intymność
Na koniec coś socjologicznego. Samantha Cole zauważa wielki powrót Voice Notes (wiadomości głosowych). Kiedyś kojarzyły się z lenistwem, dziś stają się formą intymniejszego kontaktu w świecie zalanym suchym tekstem. Jeśli masz do przekazania coś trudnego, zabawnego albo po prostu zbyt długiego na SMS-a – nagraj to. Głos niesie emocje, których nie odda żadne emoji.Wniosek na 2026?
Przeglądając listę 404 Media, widać wyraźny trend. Dziennikarze technologiczni są zmęczeni „nowościami”. Szukają ucieczki w gry, które wymagają myślenia (DS2), w sprzęty, które mają duszę (Apple II, analogi) i w narzędzia, które pozwalają im się odłączyć (Focus Mode). Może to jest właśnie najlepsza rekomendacja na ten rok: mniej scrollowania, więcej naprawiania, grania i rozmawiania.

@gabe_sky I’ve noticed that too—my chatbot sometimes forgets where we started and goes off on a tangent, or gets stuck in a loop. When it suddenly gives me a local weather update mid convo I know it's really lost it, or it's being cheeky and trying to tell me to get a life!
Maybe time to try the “big ask” approach. Though I do enjoy the meandering path that we take in our conversations sometimes.
