  1. been thinking about the low societal rumblings from ideas like: #smallweb / #slowtech / #offline / #solarpunk / #digitalminimalism / etc and i would like to declare that i officially request we bring back cybercafes.

i dont just mean some hipster nod to them, but rather specifically that they serve as *the only* place you can surf the web and check your mail. no other access to the internet, period.

pix from my beloved binary café in #toronto circa 1994. 🪦

  7. In 1994, the world's first internet cafe opened in London, sparking a movement that saw thousands spring up around the globe, cultivating unique in-person communities. People reconnected with families abroad, new friendships were formed, teens escaped parental surveillance and very few coffees were bought. Rest of World revisits the world's last internet cafes before they vanish for good.

  9. Here's a video of a camera crew visiting Starbucks back in 1996. It's a pretty cool blast from the past. The baristas discuss a lot of the coffee options they have available with the customers.

What's your favorite Starbucks coffee? I'm a Sumatra gal; I enjoy its earthiness and lack of acidity. :)
