  1. Phew! Finished my setup of Obsidian as a crossplatform Apple Notes replacement on my Mac and ios devices and am quite happy with the results so far. Here are my steps:

Subscribed to Obsidian Sync and created a vault called Notes. Added it to all of my devices making sure to place the local folders in a spot not already syncing via icloud (harder than I thought)

Installed and set up these plugins:

    - Inbox Organizer
    - Notebook Navigator

Bought the Quick Capture for Obsidian app for ios and set it to send to inbox

Set up the Obsidian webclipper on my browsers

Anything else I should be doing?

Slowly inching my way out of the Apple ecosystem (which I love! sob) and trying to find alternatives to American big tech.

  2. Pete, I know you didn't ask for advice about Joplin, so apologies for this unsolicited advice: configure the built-in backup plugin to auto-backup your notes every N hours/days, somewhere on your system drive. Better to have more than a single backup (the default value, I think, is seven).

After setting it up, test your configuration for accuracy of backup and for ability to import it back into Joplin.

    Why do all this?
Given the vagaries of various operating systems on smartphones and desktop computers, and of the connectivity between devices, synchronization is a tricky business for any cross-device, cross-platform app. There may be race conditions, or the connection may abruptly fail, or the operating system may throttle or kill the synchronization for whatever reasons; so data loss can happen. If you have a backup copy, you can simply import the lost data, and get back to work.

Also, your backup plugin may create a backup after data loss happens, but before you register the loss. In such cases, having multiple backup copies allows you to use the best version to recover your data.

Remember also that Joplin itself retains note history (by default, for 90 days), so recovery of lost data should be possible within the app itself. But I do think setting up multi-copy auto-backup outside of the app's operating zone is still good practice.

Ignore if you have already done this. 😄

  3. ChatGPT’s Apple Integrations Are Mostly a Letdown

ChatGPT's Apple app integration sounds impressive until you realise it can write to your data but can't read it.

  4. Even after 4 years this video about @[email protected] holds up pretty well.

I really wish more people moved to places like Obsidian, The Fediverse and create a better life for themselves but who knows one day it might happen.

  5. Joplin App Notes: Voice Typing and OCR

Joplin is a multiplatform free software that allows us to take and organise notes in markdown: we can link notes, attach audio recordings, drawings, files, or photos to each note, and also save a URL, website, or part of it using the Web Clipper (browser extension).

Recent versions of the app for mobile (not available on the desktop app) also allow for what is called as Voice typing, which means you can talk to the app and it transforms what you say into text. I believe it only works with English (I tried to speak in Portuguese and it was translated to English text), but I’m finding it quite useful. You need to create a new note, click on the three dots on the top right corner and choose Voice typing.

On the desktop app (not available on the mobile app), another nice feature is the ability to extract text from images or pdfs. Just right click on the file and choose View OCR text. You need to make sure it is enabled in the settings.

  6. OK #Apple, I spent a long time working on a nice #pencilPro based set of notes in the #notesapp. I would like to print it now, but nooooooooooo, it tries to generate a 1 page PDF, instead of the many many pages that it should.

  7. Rather than adding a plain link in the Notes app on macOS, if you open the link in Safari and then share it to Notes, you also get nice little preview card.

  8. Excessive note-taking? I spent time with all these apps over the last two months.
Call it procrastination, curiosity, or whatever you want.

All of them have their own strengths and weaknesses. Only three of them actually fit my lifestyle and workload.

I wonder if I could write a blog under 2000 words about my experience? 🫣 Shall l blog about it?

  9. A busy day changing how I work with my notes and tasks.

Personal notes, daily journal (and PKM) in Obsidian. I’m lucky to get the 40% educational discount.
I’ve switched TickTick for my task management. Apple Reminders will has my routine reminders as a fail safe.

  10. Another nice feature of Upnote is the colo(u)r syntax for coding, which has made the experience of jotting down my web dev notes a pleasure to use.

Upnote lets me know when a tag is open, too. getupnote.com

  11. Does anyone else experience a bug in #iOS17 in the scan mode within the #notesapp? It keeps throwing me out after a few scans

#nextcloud #notesapp

  13. There doesn't seem to be a valid reason for it, but the native #macOS #NotesApp doesn't allow you to create nested #SmartFolders even inside non-smart folders. If you use tags and smart folders a lot, this makes organizing them in a way that maps to one's mental model annoyingly difficult.

#Apple should really fix this, as it's not a bug and shouldn't be hard to implement. Otherwise, someone should write an app for that. 🙂

  14. So #Apple removed the ability to export multiple notes from the #NotesApp at some point over the last couple of years... why? Is this just collateral damage from the thrashing that happens in internal #MacOS development these days? One of those "only a handful of users ever use this function so we don't have to port it to this new UI framework we're being forced to use” kind of thing? Anybody have a shortcut to do this or something?

  15. What's your favorite note taking app on desktop?

Mine is a text editor with plain `txt` files. I have a three files for different scopes and I have one always open. I use it as a wiki but just in plain text. The only formatting I use are empty lines to separate groups of notes,

I'd like to apologize to authors of all those shiny note taking apps for neglecting their work. 🤷‍♂️
