With today‘s morning run, I crossed over the 5,000 kilometers mark for 2026, and this was a run in perfect weather: 14-15 degrees at the start, ~20 degrees at the end, most parts of the run went through the woods (aka in the shade). Giant sequoia trees in areas of the Sierra Nevada (California) that had had prescribed burns in the previous decade were four times more likely to have survived the major wildfires in 2020 and 2021.

And while I have a good ol' fashioned rant going (thanks, Apple!) let me wonder out loud why a "minor" update requires a massive 16 GB download. Have they never heard of incremental patching? JFC, I was doing tiny incremental patches to massive systems back in the early '80's for chrissakes. 45 years later and this is the best that Apple can do? This is not an improvement in software installation best practices. 😕

I downloaded the 15.63 GB update and carried on with other stuff. When it asked me if I wanted to restart to install I told it not now as I was busy. Any reasonable person would think that when I told it to go ahead, it would install from the previous download. But there are no reasonable people working at Apple. They decided it needed to redownload all 15.63 GB again. Why, oh why won't Apple hire competent developers? There is no excuse for this level of idiocy.

Once again I'm being offered an upgrade from 15.7.8 to 15.7.8. Because Apple is too lazy to give us the build numbers, I verified that it is indeed a new build. Why they can't just increment the version number is known only to the drug-addled developers at Apple. The Terminal commands to use to see the build numbers are:

Counterfactual simulations suggest that prescribed burns prevented at least 1,888 (CI: 1,487–2,302) deaths, and universal treatment would have saved an additional 3,888 (CI: 3,236–4,580) giant sequoias. These results show that prescribed burns substantially improve survival during extreme wildfires, offering guidance for conserving long-lived, fire-adapted forests under intensifying fire regimes."
