I’ve used Mendeley since I was an undergrad, but the bugs have worn me down and I want to switch. I think Zotero looks to be the best place to go next?
Now I just need to overcome the rage (and effort barrier) that I can’t transfer the library structure from Mendeley in one go, thanks for that Elsevier…

There are commercial solutions, of course, (e.g. #Mendeley) and solutions that involve out-of-premise installations like #Zotero (the server code is not OSS right?!) but I try to stay away from them as much as I can. I'd prefer an OSS solution that we can install on our own servers.
I only found https://www.bibsonomy.org/ so far. Is that any good, does anyone have experience with it?

Hello #academicchatter, can someone share their experience with referencing in #Scrivener?
I'm considering using it to write up my dissertation but I've been spoiled by #Mendeley's MS Word plugin and it turns out there is no Scrivener equivalent.
So, I wonder how you go about syncing Scrivener with your reference manager? Is #Zotero's RTF scan (and I hear #Endnote can do something similar) the best option?

Derart komplexe - und oft nicht einmal konsistente - Zitierregeln gibt mancherorts leider immer noch. Mir scheinen sie eher als Distinktionsmechanismus als als Handwerkszeug zu dienen. Wer ohne #Literaturverwaltungsprogramm promoviert, macht sich das Leben unnötig schwer. #Zotero #Citavi #Endnote #Mendeley #JabRef

@gubi Thanks for the info. I've just imported from #Mendeley and it looks like everything is there and the #Zotero citing plug-in works too, thanks for helping me escape from #EvilElsevier 😉

@Buxton_Vienna #Zotero imported all my #Mendeley library in few minutes without any problem, and discovered also one retracted item because it is integrated with retraction watch. Starred folder is not imported, so if you want to get it on Zotero just create a "favorites" collection in Mendeley before the import and put there all the starred items to see this collection migrated to Zotero.

Mendeley is driving me up the wall today. The firefox extension keeps telling me it is failing to add references to my library, but is actually succeeding half the time, so now I have a bunch of double entries. And the desktop app keeps failing to delete the extra entries and leaving me with weird half deleted entries (that can't be selected or deleted again).
Too far into my thesis to switch to Zotero, but I'm definitely switching as soon as I'm finished.

On #Mendeley, the feeling of betrayal was immense. I used to run Mendeley desktop software on my laptop around 2010 or so, and had hand-corrected hundreds of article titles and author lists that weren't parsed correctly. Then Mendeley gets bought by Elsevier and my own data becomes unavailable–I mean, it's entirely in line with Elsevier's business, to sell back to us what we have toiled away at. Hard turn to #BibTeX and pdfgrep for searching my local folder.

A kind reminder to **not use Mendeley** and, better still, preferably avoid Elsevier altogether, whenever you can.

(I know you cannot always do so, neither can I; but I no longer review for IP&M and haven't send work there for many years, for example. Little steps, yes, but if we all do this they would establish a change.)

Also, remember that #Elsevier owns #Mendeley, which it uses to collect data on you. #Zotero is #OpenSource and not run a by an EvilCorp.
