semester has hit full force

currently lying quietly on the couch watching a police procedural #gradschool

Fun with Moving Day

How’s this for a wacky movie day experience.

My step daughter rented a u-haul pod to ship most of her belongings from Massachusetts to her new school address near San Diego. The plan initially was to have it dropped off on campus, then we would show up and unload it, and they would pick it up when we were done.

Nope.

The campus has a one hour parking limit and that includes movie trailers and the like. So what to do?

How about have the pod dropped off at a u-haul storage facility sort of near the campus, then we rent a van and go to where the pod is stored, unload the pod into the van, then drive the van to campus and proceed as expected.

The plan worked like a charm with only one minor hiccup. The storage facility was half an hour away from the campus. No biggie. We got it done. Van rented, pod met and unloaded, van unloaded, van dropped off. Now all that is left is to unpack.

Ooooof. Busy week getting ready to start #gradschool and getting set up for my TA gig as a music library assistant. Back to my roots from the beginning of my career when I spent 4-5 years prepping, distributing, collecting, fixing, and filing sheet music. #conducting lessons are going well so far, about 10 days till I get myself in front of the #uvic wind symphony.

My initial college plan was to add to my experience in the trades with a degree in #architecture or #engineering.

After pivoting to #academia my interest in building and #design resurfaces — as when I helped repurpose furniture storage into usable #workSpace during #gradSchool.

The postbac I am mentoring has thus far applied to a 18 PhD programs (a reasonable precaution right now), 13 of which have fees for a total cost of $1,001 (AVG = 77±20, max=105, min=30). I know the numbers because, as part of the position, I committed to paying these fees out of unrestricted funds. It's a good thing, too, because as a 1st gen student, this many applications would be totally unaffordable.
