Publishers and Authors Sue Meta, Alleging ‘Massive’ Copyright Infringement Behind Its Llama AI Service
The class action lawsuit, filed in New York, accuses Meta—and its founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally—of building its Llama AI service with unauthorized copies knowingly sourced from illegal pirate sites.

Some weeks ago I accepted a review request from a prestige journal (in a small field). I found the abstract interesting, but had hesitations due to poor experience with editorial process as an author with this journal, and since it was an El$evier journal (which I try to avoid doing free work for).
Now the deadline review is approaching, and the study was less interesting than assumed, has no data available, poor transparency, typos that should have been weeded out in the review process, and I'm regretting my decision. I will fortify my review policy for the future!

update: PDF obtained, i love fedi :neocat_hyper:
i saw a few posts in this hashtag so hopefully this is a thing? #ICanHazPDF
Wikipedia Library's ScienceDirect subscription doesn't seem to include Endocrine Practice and I haven't been able to find this article any other way so I would really appreciate if anyone who has access to #ScienceDirect or #Elsevier journals or whatever would include this could see if they can get me a copy of this, because it's actually huge to have a Real Study™ confirming this and I need to see it:
A. L. Misakian, D. Ariel, E. A. Sullivan, et al., "Injectable Estradiol Monotherapy Effectively Suppresses Testosterone in Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy", Endocrine Practice 31, no. 11: P1462–69, doi:10.1016/j.eprac.2025.07.002
many thanks in advance :neocat_sad_reach:

About charging money:The reviewers don't charge anything, they don't get paid. Neither do the scientists who write the paper. The big publishers (e.g. #Elsevier) charge so much because they can. They get free work from all sides and charge royally for it. This is one of the main issues with the current system.
Fortunately, things are changing slowly, with some major universities cancelling their subscriptions and are moving to open access.

Update. While the #ThomsonReuters employee letter is not yet public, #Poynter quotes from it: "The detrimental actions of #ICE, and the #DHS’s lack of oversight and direct falsehoods regarding the situation in #Minnesota and other cities, makes us question if our investigative products and services are being used in accordance with our mission and values, as well as in accordance with the law and our nation’s constitution.”
https://www.poynter.org/business-work/2026/law360-reuters-newsrooms-letter-against-ice-dhs/The same article links to a similar letter from #RELX employees to management about a $22.1 million contract with ICE. RELX is the parent company of #LexisNexis and #Elsevier.
https://www.poynter.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/law360-demand-letter.pdfThat letter is public. From the RELX employee letter: "We are deeply concerned that RELX is directly aiding the separation of families, the removal of children from schools and the death of individuals in detention centers."
RELX deleted a page from its FAQ, posted during the Biden administration, saying that its tools would not be used for these purposes. But here's a copy from the #WaybackMachine.

i wonder how true this is… #elsevier is shitty in a billion other ways so it’s entirely plausible 😶

Today in a new low for Elsevier, the infamous academic publisher:
"Elsevier, the company that makes a lot of the compulsory textbooks for University, commissioned scientists to develop a new book binding glue designed to fail after 3 years, as they hated that there was a second hand market."
Planned obsolescence to quell the second hand market ... if confirmed – it's the sort of thing this company would do –, may they be hacked to oblivion.

Here's another article that made it through peer review (at #Elsevier) with the false claim that all #OpenAccess journals charge #APCs. www.journalofsurgicalresearch.com/article/S002... #ScholComm

Update. Here's another article that made it through peer review (at #Elsevier) with the false claim that all #OpenAccess journals charge #APCs.
https://www.journalofsurgicalresearch.com/article/S0022-4804(26)00045-4/abstractI only have access to the abstract, not the full text. If I learn that the article acknowledges that no-APC OA (#DiamondOA) journals exist, and even outnumber APC-based OA journals, then I'll correct this post. But I'll still criticize the authors and editors for publishing a false claim in the abstract, namely, "Open access (OA) publishing…requires article processing charges (APCs)."
