I was recently thinking of replacing some podcast listening with listening to research papers via text-to-speech. There are generic apps for this, but they are a bit expensive and I would have to get the PDFs out of Zotero and into those apps -- even better is to have that read-aloud feature right in Zotero. Oh my I'm looking forward to this on my phone.

Was paying $60 for 6 GB storage in #Zotero, but took the time to resync my articles to Google Drive with Zotmoov, and was able to downgrade my storage usage from a little over 2 GB to a little over 300 MB, which still put me over the free account, but let me go down to $20 for a 2 GB renewal. I do like using it for citations and annotations. I also use Obsidian, syncing notes to Google Drive storage with connectivity to Zotero. #phDLife #techTools

Technical or academic writers... if you use Zotero for your sources, and if you sync to Zotero ($ but not much $), you get API access to your Zotero stuff - you can just set up an API key.

Which means you can programmatically add a *tag* to all the items you are using in a paper.

And you can export a bib file filtered for the key.

So. then in your paper you can just cite your item (like if you use pandoc [@MyDocumentKey: 22-23] or what now).

Then you can automate the rest: run a script to list the docs you are citing (by citation key - I use Better BibText so I can rename those), and another to refresh your Zotero tags so you can automatically export the CORRECT bib file for your bibliography when you generate a bib file with a filtered list.

Also if you want to procrastinate you can write scripts instead of writing your paper.

Hmmm. I tend to overall like #Zotero very much. For the last two versions (at least), automatic renaming of linked files just doesn't work. I have the setting correct. It's selected to automatically rename files including links. And it just... doesn't.

Now if I go into the settings and manually select to rename en masse and *sometimes* if I select the linked file in Zotero it will give me an option to rename. But automaticly renaming linked files like older versions did? Nope. It just doesn't.

Are there any suitable solutions to convert footnotes that were created using the #citavi plugin for M$ #word into a free/open format? Ideally it would be possible to link them to a #zotero export of the bibliography that had been created using #citavi before. But I would already be glad about any clues that help not having to create all the footnotes again using open tools.

Gibt es eigentlich brauchbare Loesungen, um Fussnoten, die mit dem #citavi Plugin fuer M$ #word erstellt wurden, in ein freies/offenes Format zu konvertieren? Idealerweise so, dass man einen #zotero Export der vormals mit #citavi erstellten Bibliographie damit verknuepfen kann, aber erfreulich waere schon jeder Anhaltspunkt, der ueberhaupt dabei hilft, nicht alle Fussnoten mit offenen Tools neu erstellen zu muessen.

To do:

• permanently set DISPLAY for the user
• check whether making xhost more permissive is necessary (since the chroot user has access to .Xauthority)

Things that caught me out:

• forgetting to mount both /home AND /home/<user> since they are separate datasets

Things that made it easier:

• there is an unofficial apt repository with the latest version of Zotero available; this pulled in the required dependencies

And success!

To run #zotero 9.0 (or any X11 app) on #freebsd:
On the host:

• Ubuntu Jammy chroot
• mounting /tmp, /home, AND /home/<user> (because my home directory is a separate ZFS dataset)
• make xhost permissive (i.e. xhost +)

In the chroot:

• creating a user with the same uid as my FreeBSD user
• increase file descriptor limits for the user
• export DISPLAY=:0.0 (as the user)
• simply run zotero

Ich beschäftige mich ja nicht mehr allzu oft mit dem #zitieren , aber den Trick zum Zitieren von DIN Normen möchte ich dann doch gerne teilen: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/94755/wie-richtlinien-und-normen-techn-standards-engineer-standards-in-zotero-einfuegen-und-zitieren

DIN Media gibt im Gegensatz zu Nautos auch DOIs an, die z.B. einfach mit #zotero importiert werden können. 🤯

Der Import ist relativ knapp, aber sollte für die meisten Sachen ausreichen. 🙂 Aufgefallen sind mir bloß Unterstriche statt Leerzeichen im Titel, was korrigiert werden sollte. 📝
