The name of the game was to end the #Mendeley and #EndNote duopoly, and I'd say they succeeded. #Zotero en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zotero (I used to be a paying customer, but not just at the moment; my library is WAY TOO BIG and I'm having problems with the sync function. Probably proxies/VPN.) #research #phd #knowledgework #nonai

Researchers, Phd's, HDR's, Master by Research, those of you out there annotating your journals, what do you use the various colours to represent?

Screenshot from Zotero Reference Manager. Ps. I love Zotero, Open Source and Free and my research will alway availble to me without a fee.

Endnote constantly breaks in a MacOS. Even though I don't have a computer with MacOS installed, I am constantly asked to fix one such computer ...

Also, Endnote does not care about you as a user. For example, an update will be installed anytime, even when you are about to complete a proposal or a manuscript, and often screw itself up and require IT assistance for the license, delaying you at the worst possible moment. Reminds me of Microsoft.

Zotero does not have any of these problems.

  8. Anyone here has used both #Zotero and #Endnote?

If so, which one do you prefer (if we set aside the fact that one is non-profit and the other is an exploitative for-profit)? Like, on the features and ease of use only?

  9. Switching from EndNote to Zotero? Not as smooth as I hoped.

    Wanted:
export EndNote library with PDFs, notes & group structure
    Got:
    * no group export via RIS/XML, had to do it manually,
    * double records for refs in multiple groups
    * lost (research) notes
    * syncing to Zotero web = painfully slow
    * limited storage 2GB (have to pay 120$/year for unlimited storage)

  10. @zotero Hello Zotero! I would love to migrate my EndNote library to Zotero. Is it possible to migrate not only the references within my groups, but also the entire group structure? I haven't been able to find a way to do this yet, so I would be very grateful if you could guide me through the process.

  11. So far, I have been unable to find a solution to also export my EndNote group structure. Unfortunately, I think I will have to use Python to complete this migration, but I am a beginner when it comes to Python. Fingers crossed!

  12. (2/X) Migration update: Moving from Windows to Linux!
Most of my software have solid alternatives — switched from EndNote to Zotero for reference management.
But migrating everything (attachments, file structure/groups) from EndNote is proving tricky.
📚 If you know how to fully export an EndNote library with PDFs and folder structure, let me know!

  15. From what I read online, Medium is quite temperamental with HTML coding due to its "smart" editor.

Did the same person or team design Microsoft Word and #EndNote?

New poem idea: The trauma of Microsoft Word, Medium, WordPress, and other platforms that won’t accept #LaTEX. 😆

  16. Do you use a reference manager, such as Zotero or Endnote? The Utrecht University Library would like to help you better use and manage references. That is why we would like to learn which tools you use.

You can help us by completing this survey: survey.uu.nl/jfe/form/SV_8J4cQ

  17. Cheers for open-source software! (again and again)
I'm in the process of moving a large and long-standing #Endnote-library to #Zotero:
The translator for endnote-xml got 86% of items right - but still, 1,800 items needed to be checked manually.
Editing the translator and running it again got the percentage up to 94% - only 680 items to go \o/

It's all too clear, isn't it. #WebOfScience would like the status quo to not change at all – they are profiting enormously from it. Whereas scientists would like the status quo to change – our grants are being drained dry from publishing fees, our libraries are also drained dry from subscription fees, and academic administrators spend countless moneys on bibliometrics supplied by Clarivate to "evaluate" academics for their "throughput" – in quotes because using these words for what they actually do (counting papers and citations) is a perversion.

By the way #Clarivate owns #EndNote, #Publons and #ScholarOne – we really ought to not use *any* of these. It's in our power.

  19. Does anyone have experience using #Endnote with #GoogleDocs? I'm trying to assist a team who may have reached some sort of threshold (at 175+ references), and the document is no longer updating. I've suggested that they file a support ticket, but said I'd try to consult the hive mind in the meantime. #AcademicChatter #Librarians #AcademicLibraries #Academia #PhDchat @librarians

  20. I'm writing a report on my #ChurchillFellowship travels on #timebanking and #MutualAid and there are an awful lot of #anarchist references and pondering that a Google folder may not be the best place to store them.. is there any open source non spying alternative to #EndNote or similar..it's been 20+ years since I've needed to do this sort of thing! I do use #Notion a bit so that would work too. Any suggestions gratefully received.

  21. Hello #academicchatter, can someone share their experience with referencing in #Scrivener?

I'm considering using it to write up my dissertation but I've been spoiled by #Mendeley's MS Word plugin and it turns out there is no Scrivener equivalent.

So, I wonder how you go about syncing Scrivener with your reference manager? Is #Zotero's RTF scan (and I hear #Endnote can do something similar) the best option?

  22. CW: academia, endnote, reference managers, patents

Does anyone have experience, pointers, or examples of importing patents or patent applications into Endnote?

Hand entering data would be fine but it's not clear to me what information goes in what fields. If anyone has an example of a filled in endnote entry, that would be helpful as I could compare fields between endnote and an available online database.

Google scholar lets you search patents with some limits, but downloading them into endnote format loses most of the information.

Freepatentsonline.com seems to work marginally better, yielding a couple more fields.

    Are there other options?

  23. And once again, EndNote consistently displays incomprehensible warnings that mean SFA to the average punter. I wasn't even using EndNote - this is their 19thC hypersensitive MS Word plugin aunt needing the smelling salts after a fainting attack... FFS

#EndNote, for the love of the language, please get someone who can write these warnings so they make sense.

  24. #Zotero #EndNote EndNote Comments appreciated. Testing functionality so our team can decide what to use. Zotero saves references well but seems worse for WYSIWYG in documents. Insertion of citation seems slow for Zotero. Default option just seems to hang. If I switch to classic view I can see my folders and choose a citation and things work ok from there. EndNote I could choose a citation and insert it with one click, does not seem to be a Zotero option. Feedback?

#Zotero #Citavi #Endnote #Mendeley #JabRef
