  1. @jabref
I have using the #BibTeX + #JabRef setup for a very long time. My reference library already contains over 2,000 fully formated sources across various fields of study.

  2. 🛠 What does an end-to-end open-source stack look like for an independent hydrogeochemical monograph?

Doing full-cycle research—from thermodynamic calculations to print-ready LaTeX typesetting—requires a synchronized toolkit. Here is the exact stack:

    🧪 Thermodynamics & Analytics:
    #PHREEQC 3.7.3 for aqueous speciation&equilibrium modeling.
#Rstats Stack: RedModRphree, ggtern, sf/terra, tidyverse (ETL).

    🗺 GIS & Literature Search:
#QGIS for spatial alignment & cartography.
#Recoll for local full-text search across reference databases.

    📚 Typesetting & Reproducibility:
    #LaTeX2e + #TeXStudio + #JabRef for typography & #BibTeX references.
    • xtable for automated R-to-LaTeX data exporting.
#Debian Linux as a main engine.

💡 Takeaway: Zero proprietary software licenses needed. Complete reproducibility from raw analytical data to a print-ready PDF.

  3. Another milestone reached!
We crossed the 4500 stargazers on #github

And we are close to another milestone, the 6.0-beta. We worked hard and worked on improvements and bug fixes across JabRef. For example, we revamped the entry editor to make it easier to add/remove fields.

Curious? Try out the latest dev version and see for yourself!

  4. Another view on #JabRef. Most probably the #Java #DesktopApplication with the most #dependencies.

We are very happy for the strong community of maintainers.

If you like our #OpenSource work, please give us a star ⭐ at github.com/jabref/jabref/.

And surely a huge thank you to the whole community of Open Source maintainers driving the whole #Java and #JavaFX eco system.

  5. We are excited that we are participating in #GSOC2026 with 3 projects:

    - "Improved handling of older documents with OCR and AI-powered tools."

    - "Improved #LibreOffice -JabRef integration" with one particular aspect of compatibility with other reference managers.

    - "Improving startup times for JabKit" by leveraging the power of #GraalVM

  6. @dlesieur That is a cool project idea. At #JabRef we have a kind of regression testing only for a couple of styles where we check the generated html output of a few standard styles for references, but not that systematic

  7. Do you use #LIbreOffice together with #JabRef and want to have an easy way to convert citations and references to plaintext and vice versa?
We have now published our first LibreOffice extension, originally developed by @teertrinker and extended by the JabRef maintainers.
    Check it out under:

  8. @fussballinguist Nice.

#OpenSource

  10. We have to make a second announcement: #JabRef got accepted for this year's #GSOC #GSOC2026 as well!
You can find our information page (including the list of projects) at

  11. Happy Valentine's Day, and more important, today is "I Love Free Software Day! The day to express gratitude to all those #opensource contributors.

And of course we would like to thank all people who contribute to #JabRef in so many ways. This keeps us motivated.

  12. @tub Recherche mit #OpenAlex ist in #JabRef auch inkludiert in der aktuellen Entwicklerversion

  13. In the latest development version, JabRef now supports multiple citation fetchers/providers, including SemanticScholar, @crossref @opencitations and @OpenAlex

And at the bottom we provide some additional metrics from scite.ai

    Grab the version here: builds.jabref.org/main/

PS: This version now uses also JavaFX 25.02 and JDK 25.02.

  14. @petebachant NIce, and for your #bibliography you can now do the same with #JabRef as well. We integrated pushing to #git as well in the most recent version

  15. We know that there are some #emacs fans among our followers. We would like to see a blog article about using JabRef's #LSP server with Emacs as a client. The LSP server covers the integrity check and consistency check of #JabRef.
Not only that, but we are happy for a quick write-up from a real human, not some AI slop. The blog post will, of course, feature your name.

  16. Thanks to the cool feature of #javafx called the `shortcut` modifier, we can now display and handle the keyboard shortcuts in a more OS independent way.
On Linux and Windows `cmd` key will be replaced with ctrl automatically and option key with alt.

  17. We have an early present for you!
Leveraging JabRef's brand new Git integration, it's now possible to directly sync your bibliography with Overleaf by using GitHub as an intermediate.

We have written a short description in our blog post on how to get started.
Currently, only one-way sync is possible!
