  1. That'll show 'em!

"A statue of #Maimonides in the #Spanish city of #Córdoba was vandalized with a #swastika spray-painted on its base, Spanish media reported. Authorities have not yet announced whether any suspects have been identified in connection with the vandalism.

According to the reports, the #Nazi symbol was painted on the base of the bronze statue in #PlazadeTiberíades, in Córdoba’s historic #Jewish quarter.

The square is considered one of the city’s main attractions and is a regular stop on tourist routes."

  2. "For those seeking an entry into the most brilliant of #Jewish #legal minds, a recently launched series serves as an immensely rewarding resource. The first volume of #Koren -Publisher’s #Steinsaltz Edition of #Maimonides’ code of #Jewishlaw, the #Mishne #Torah, has been published in English. It seeks to make the legendary #medieval thinker’s #teachings accessible to a wide audience, utilizing the commentary of the late #Rabbi #AdinSteinsaltz, who passed away in 2020.

In addition to the clear English #translation of the source material, this unique edition contains sections covering additional legal perspectives that supplement those of the #MishneTorah itself. Also included are some of the late #Lubavitcher #Rebbe’s writings on Maimonides’ legal rulings.

Most helpful are the conceptual #essays in the back of the #book, which touch upon how Maimonides’ thought has been adapted, and argued with, over the ages."

Jäädytetyt versiot nimetään filosofien mukaan. Maimonides oli yksi suurimmista juutalaisista filosofeista. Hänen ajattelunsa vaikutti mm. Tuomas Akvinolaiseen ja Iisac Newtoniin.

  4. I lost my chat with one of you noting the parallels between the negative epistemology we get from my ontic vagueness bit (zenodo.org/records/14674036) and Maimonides's apophatic theology. I had not realized how nice of a parallel there is here.

Speak up if it was you? My posts autodelete if I don't bookmark them and I have forgotten who flagged it; I'd like to thank you again.

  5. It is a positive commandment of the Torah to relate the miracles and wonders wrought for our ancestors in Egypt on the night of the 15th of Nissan, as it is written (Exodus 13:3): "Remember this day when you left Egypt," similar to the obligation (Exodus 20:8): "Remember the Sabbath day."

How do we know this is on the night of the 15th? This is taught by the words (Exodus 13:8): "And you shall tell your child on that day, saying: 'It is because of this..." which indicate it is to be done at the time when matzah and marror are placed before you.

This mitzvah applies even when one does not have a child to tell. Even wise sages who know it well are obligated to tell about the Exodus from Egypt. Whoever elaborates upon the events which transpired is worthy of praise.

  6. It is a postiive commandment of the Torah to eat matzah on the night of the fifteenth of Nissan, as it is written (Exodus 12:18): "In the evening, you shall eat matzot." This applies in every place and time. ...
The early sages would starve themselves on the day before Passover in order to eat the matzah with an appetite and make the mitzvot precious.

  7. Although memories of the suffering endured by our people will one day be nullified, as Isaiah (65:16) prophesied: "For the former suffering will be forgotten and for they will be hidden from My eye," the celebration of Purim will never be nullified, as it is written (Esther 9:28): "And these days of Purim will not pass from among the Jews, nor will their remembrance cease from their descendants."

  8. It is better to increase in gifts to the poor than to increase the size of the Purim feast or food portions sent to friends. For there is no greater and more splendid joy than to gladden the hearts of the poor, the orphans, the widows, and the converts. One who gladdens the hearts of the downtrodden resembles the Divine Presence, which Isaiah (57:15) describes as always there "to revive the spirit of the lowly and the broken hearted."

  9. #Wikipedia / Controversy over "Redemption of Captives" Entry on Wikipedia Amid Efforts to Sway Public Opinion

The demand for the return of the Israeli captives held by Hamas for 150 days has led to an embarrassing war around the value of "redemption of captives" (Hebrew: פידיון שבויים) on the Wikipedia. Until recently, the entry dealing with the commandment of returning captives focused on #Maimonides' interpretation that "there is no greater commandment than the redemption of captives." However, observant surfers noticed that since October 26th, the entry has been changed several times, and qualifications to the commandment were introduced - in what appears to be an attempt to sway public opinion.

  10. " The Guide for the Perplexed" sits as yet unread on my bookshelf. I'll get round to it at some point, I hope.

Alberto Manguel's "Maimonides: Faith in Reason" uses this Cordoban statue for an illustration and notes it was erected in 1964.

I'd like to know more about the decision to commemorate the great Jewish philosopher in the city of his birth. At the time of the Civil War, Francoist rhetoric had an ugly antisemitic streak. What had changed by the sixties? Was it a purely local initiative?

  15. How many candles do we light on Chanukah? The mitzvah is that each household light one candle, regardless of whether it contains many people or only one. One who wishes to beautify the mitzvah lights a candle for every member of the household, both men and women.
One who wishes to beautify further and do the mitzvah in the finest manner lights one candle for each individual on the first night, and adds an additional candle on each of the subsequent nights.

  16. If a teacher does not follow a proper path, even if they are very wise and the entire nation depends upon them, do not study from them until they improve, as it states (Malachi 2:7): "For a priest's lips perpetuate knowledge; seek Torah from his mouth, because he is a messenger of the Lord of Hosts." The sages explained: If a teacher resembles "a messenger of the Lord of Hosts," seek Torah from his mouth; if not, do not seek Torah from his mouth.

  17. When the Jewish people defeated their enemies, it was the 25th of Kislev. They entered the sanctuary of the Temple, but could only find one jar of pure olive oil there, and it only had enough to light for one day. They lit the lamps of the Menorah from it for eight days, until they had crushed olives and produced more pure oil. Therefore, the sages of that generation established that the eight days beginning on the 25th of Kislev be days of celebration and praise. We light lamps in the evening at the entrance of the house on each of the eight nights to publicize the miracle. These days are called Chanukah.

  22. Maimonides by way of Hollywood? On #Leverage:Redemption (E1 S1) I think Alec "my Nana leads a multi-denominational household" Hardison (actor Aldis Hodge) just schooled Harry Wilson (Noah Wyle) on #Maimonides Laws of #Repentence.
