"When #Rabbi #EdRosenthal, Founder & CEO of #RepairtheSea, received an unexpected phone call two years ago from #RachelleBurk, he had no idea that the conversation would turn into something much bigger than he could have imagined. Rachelle #Burk, an acclaimed #childrensbook #author and avid scuba diver, asked #Rabbi Ed if he would be interested in a #book for young readers to share his love of the Sea and his desire to protect it that she would write. Having written a number of other #Jewish children’s #books including “She’s a #Mensch! Jewish Women Who Rocked the World” and “Space #Torah: Astronaut Jeffrey Hoffman’s Cosmic #Mitzvah,” Rachelle shared with Rabbi Ed that, as a scuba diver, she had always wanted to write a book about the undersea world. Featuring Rabbi Ed and Repair the Sea’s Reverse #Tashlich program would be the perfect way to accomplish that goal."

"Every so often, a single page surfaces that does more than preserve ink on paper; it captures a pivotal moment in our #history. One such document that was consigned to the shop this week was a single, extraordinary sheet of a two-sided letterhead from #Warsaw, dated 1920. It bears the official stationery of a #Gerrer #chassidic #mesivta. On one side, you see the unmistakable, bold handwriting of none other than #Rav #MeirShapiro, the legendary visionary of #DafYomi and #Lublin. On the reverse is a letter by the #ImreiEmes of #Ger, Rav #AvrahamMordechaiAlter.
The recipient of this heavy-hitting letter was #Rabbi #YosefBaumgarten (1864-1933), the distinguished dayan and later av beit din of #Vienna's famed #SchiffShul. Rav #Baumgarten was a man deeply involved in the global communal affairs of the era, making him the perfect address for this urgent appeal."

"A remarkable discovery has recently emerged from among a group of rare #books and #manuscripts consigned to my shop: an unrecorded eighteenth-century #Hebrew autograph manuscript penned by #Rabbi #YekutielGordon, one of the most fascinating and consequential members of the inner circle of Rabbi #MosheChaimLuzzatto, the #Ramchal.
Hidden from public view for centuries, this extraordinary #manuscript came to light only through careful examination of a collection entrusted to the shop for sale.
The manuscript itself is modest in size – approximately 4.5 by 6.5 inches – but immense in significance. Consisting of one hundred surviving double-sided folios, it preserves what appears to be a previously unknown work entitled #MarehKohen, together with a section of #MarehMussar, a work already known to scholars and associated with Rabbi Yekutiel Gordon.
Mareh Kohen focuses largely on the themes of #Elul, #teshuvah, the #YamimNoraim, and the profound symbolism of the #shofar."

"What would happen if you treated the #DeclarationofIndependence the way #Jewish tradition treats its own foundational texts — as documents to be pored and argued over, and put in conversation with ancient sources?
That’s the idea of “#Talmud of #America,” a collection of four #essays #published by the #PardesInstitute of #JewishStudies, and #Faith250, the brainchild of #Rabbi #MichaelHolzman of Northern #Virginia.
“The #Torah is a living document,” Rabbi #LeonMorris, president of #Pardes, told me recently. “Classic Jewish texts have something fresh and relevant to say about everything — including the Declaration of Independence.”
The four essays in “#TalmudofAmerica” — on equality, on “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” on the right of rebellion and on ideas of sacrifice and civic engagement — are written by Pardes #faculty members #YiscahSmith, #LeahRosenthal, #DavidIBernstein and Rabbi #RahelBerkovits."
