I am speaking, of course, of #Rabbi #ShlomoCarlebach.
This weekend marked the #premiere of The Darkest Light, an aptly titled new #film about #Carlebach’s life, and about the ways his family, followers and community have wrestled with his profoundly contradictory legacy. The moral center of the film is one of Carlebach’s two daughters, #Neshama, who was his #musical and #spiritual heir. It is heartbreaking to watch the many scenes of the two of them together, prior to his death (sudden, of a heart attack, on a plane set to leave LaGuardia Airport in 1994). She is so obviously in love with him, and he with her. If we didn’t know what was coming next, the videos would be achingly sacred and beautiful."

"#Ziegler’s Ruth: From Alienation to Monarchy is a 534-page book on a four-chapter #megillah. The disproportion is the point. Ziegler, a faculty member at #HerzogCollege and teacher at #MatanandMidreshetMoriah, spent more than two decades teaching #MegillatRuth in #bateimidrash before committing these #shiurim to print. What she has produced is not a work of academic #biblical criticism.
It is a work of #Torah, one that happens to deploy #literary tools in service of the sacred text’s deeper meaning. The 18th century #Rabbi Meir Leibush Ben Michel Wisser (MALBI'M) in his commentary on #Zecharia 12:4-8, describes how the #Iranian coalition that attacked #Israel on Oct 7 would rise against us three times: the first time succeeding, but the other two failing miserably. He goes on to describe how Iran's strategic masterminds, Intelligence apparatus, and #Arab accomplices will fight without any clear plan, organizing principal, or practical goal, such that their every effort will disintegrate like kindling in a stove. He also explains how the descendants of #Ishmael will be attacked and die in their own countries and on their own lands at the hands of the Iranian coalition.
