Adak PADK → Eareckson Air Station PASY

This is the longest leg of the current journey: there are no runways for 350 nm between these two airports. Two highlights are worth mentioning:

1. During this leg, I crossed the 180th meridian, so I am now traveling in the Earth's Eastern Hemisphere.

2. I filed Petropavlovsk UHPP as my alternate for this flight. Accordingly, the King Air had to be heavily fueled: After all, it’s another 570 nm from Eareckson to Petropavlovsk.

Nikolski Air Station PAKO → Atka PAAK

Visually, there were some strong Hawaii vibes along the way – the colors of the volcanic landscape felt familiar to me sometimes.

California is now behind me; Medford is the first stop in Oregon. With the King Air, the 70 miles passed in no time at all, there was barely enough time to snap a few photos.

This time, I switched to X-Plane 12 as my flight simulator software and completed a few training flights.

The King Air C90B is a twin-engine turboprop and comes with a classic-meets-modern "mullet" cockpit, so I wanted to give it a try.

The default ground imagery in X-Plane differs from Microsoft Flight Simulator in that there’s no aerial imagery projected onto the ground, which is a slight drawback. However, the lighting effects are impressive, which makes up for it to some extent.

Sacramento Executive KSAC → Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County KSTS

The Beechcraft King Air 350i that ships with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is broken. This was my first and last flight with this particular aircraft.

I had to skip several steps in the startup checklist because there are simply no instruments to monitor the engines.

Also missing: the ability to add departure, arrival, and approach procedures to the flight plan.

So, it ended up being mostly a VFR flight, which, fortunately, worked out fine thanks to the excellent weather.

The King Air 350i in MSFS 2020 is the significantly better version.

This leg’s highlights? San Francisco’s skyline, the Bay’s iconic bridges, the rugged beauty of Point Reyes, and a breathtaking sunset.
